Should I get a decorative firepit or a fireplace/grill combo?

Asked by StaceyD (215points) April 30th, 2015

We bought an outdoor fireplace years ago at Target. It’s been used at home, campsites, the beach – wherever we want to warm up and toast marshmallows. The bottom finally rusted out and we need a new one. I am torn between getting an outdoor fireplace/grill, that is portable like my old fireplace. My old one did not have a grill but I see they have that feature now, which is really convenient for a few quick hot dogs or burgers.

Or I could go in another direction since we are adding to our outdoor furnishings and trying to get high end items for the deck. I like those firepits that have stone or marble around them but they are more costly. Plus they are not portable. But they look so beautiful, like ones pictured on this site:

Both are completely different from my old one, which was a standup fireplace with a screen in front. Does anyone have a fireplace/grill or firepit with stone edges? What are the pros and cons? Thanks!

It really depends on whether you want to use it for cooking, doesn’t it? If you do, the choice is clear.

Here are some questions to consider:

* Does your family still plan on traveling enough to warrant purchasing a mobile grill? Or are there other options that might be safer? Using an existing grill in a park or campground comes to mind.
* Which of these two options is easier to clean and maintain?
* Which will last the longer?
* Which will get the most use?
* Which is the most affordable?

You and your family know what is best in this situation. Please do let us know what you decide and why.

You can roast marshmallows and cook a hotdog on a stick over a fire pit if you love how it looks.

If one is much easier to transport, and you transport it a lot, go with that choice.

Firepit. Love mine. Got it at Lowes last summer. I use it all the time. Obviously it doesn’t move – it’s in the back yard, but it is wonderful.
