Has anyone used Ning to set up a social networking site. Are there better alternatives? Is it easy to set up? How difficult is it to maintian?

I have set up a Ning site myself. I choose Ning because of its ease of use, customization through css and widgets, and because it uses AJAX really well. The site acts like a web app more than anything else.

http://www.acdsocial.org is mine. It’s for local Mac users of the Apple Corps of Dallas and is replacing some old outdated forums.
