If your state imposed a 5% tax for improvements, what would you vote they need to improve first?

I’m rural Illinois, so I vote roads.

Agreed. Roads and bridges.
I live in Idaho and a former governor proposed and instigated a road project to “Connect Idaho.” It’s a project to build a roadway (freeway?) from I-84 between Nampa and Meridian north through Emmett to connect with US 95 just south of Council. This among other needed road reconstruction projects.

A traffic light at the subdivision immediately north of me. A reevaluation of the traffic light timing. The intersections last waaayyyy too long. Ive noticed to have been changed to shorter time intervals since I moved here. We actually had timed it, because it was so ridiculous, and I feel it is unsafe.

Renovate little downtown Tarpon Springs sponge docks area.

Finish construction improvements of I275 through Tampa.

Can some money go to schools? The schools that are below par need some money thrown at them to improve whatever it takes to make it a better environement for children. Specifically, I really care about the high schools. Better programs to prepare teens for their next step after graduation.

“Free” or subsidized healthcare.

GoPros strapped to the chests of every cop. And with the other 4.9999% Municipal Fiber run by the local utility companies.

Roads & bridges.

Our crumbling roads and bridges are the BIG red flag, and in these days of revenue shortfall, it is the the rural areas of the country that are going to suffer the really big hits, further isolating the “throwaway” hinterlands. But I think the one project that should be a priority of the federal government is a nationwide wi-fi connectivity network.

Education then infrastructure then police training in community policing then libraries.

Crumbling infrastructure needs the most attention, and I include aging (and most likely leaking) city water & sewer pipes in this category. Public parks and green spaces are another critical issue in many areas.

@janbb also mentioned libraries, but I wonder. Are they the essential community resources that they once were? With the internet available as an information source, and with the rapid expansion of ebook availability (as well as electronic subscriptions) I see public libraries as slowly fading in both importance and popularity.

I base this assessment on my own experience. I acquired my first adult library card in 1967, and continuously maintained a library card until a few years ago, when I let it lapse. Despite being an avid—and frequent—library user for most of my life, I have not set foot inside my local public library since last September, and I don’t miss it at all.

@sahID I don’t disagree with your assessment which is why I didn’t put them higher on my list but I think particularly inner-city libraries have a role to fill in providing access to technology and information for their constituents. And I think there is a communal aspect to libraries that it would be sad if we abandoned all together but that is the tenor of the times. There is also programming for children and seniors that fulfills a need. And there is access to online databases and e-books that are not available to private citizens. But I confess, I also don’t use the library the same way I used to.

It is a serious and scary situation for us west coasters at this time.
Fire season is just around the corner and this drought is holding on as strong as ever. The rainy season is over now and we are screwed with the coming heat.

High speed internet, too.
A rural county in another state nearby ran fiber optic cable to every single house.
