How much is an appropriate tip to have our couch moved to the curb?

Asked by tedibear (19389points) May 1st, 2015 from iPhone

Our new couch will be delivered on Tuesday. We plan to ask the delivery people if they are allowed to move the old couch to the curb for trash pickup.

How much is an appropriate tip? My first thought was $10 to $15 each. However, as I think about it, maybe $20 is more appropriate. Our driveway isn’t particularly long, and they would only have to take it down five stairs.

I consider myself a pretty heavy tipper and 10 each seems totally fine for what should only be a few minutes of work. That is assuming there is no awkward curves or small doorways they need to get through.

How about a pack of cookies instead?

My mom had something similar done and she gave the two guys a total of $20. In other words, $10 each.

$10 each is fine I think.

I was thinking $10 each.

If it is big, clumsy and really heavy, I would err on the high side and give them $20 each.

five stairs or five steps?

I would say buy a six pack to split among the two guys.

Depending on the time of day I would probably phrase it not as a tip but something like, “Lunch is on me.” and hand them the cash.

Why not ask them what they would take to move the couch. I bet the number will be lower than you are talking about. In which case, you can blow them away and give them more.

What ever you were going to tip them for the new couch is fine. Usually after tipping them they are fine with the idea of removing the old one.
When I replaced my bed and tipped them I asked them if they would mind taking the old mattress out to the dumpster. They were so happy with the tip that they did it with a smile.

@rojo – 5 steps down from the living room to the front door. They will have to make one adjustment in the hallway, but nothing bad.

@all – Many thanks! I think we’ll go with $10, unless Mr. Tedibear thinks they’re particularly helpful. I won’t be home, so he gets to deal with it.
