Why does laundry smell so good after hanging outside to dry?

A child asked me this, and I can’t think of a sensible answer.

That smell is ozone. And it’s amazing that it will still be on sheets that have been folded and stored away for months.
I don’t like the smell of line dried laundry. My daughter lives in Scotland and really misses fluffy dryer towels.
It is one of the best smells in the world, and thank you @stanleybmanly for explaining it so well.
