Is this unprofessional neglect and have you experienced it ?

Asked by Aster (20028points) June 9th, 2015

A close friend of mine was awakened at 2am with extreme throbbing in her tooth to the point she was hallucinating. She called her dentist and he said, “I can’t do anything now; take two painkillers. You’ll just have to wait until morning.” And she said, “what if I can’t wait?” and he said, “you’ll just have to.” They hung up.
I think she should have gone to the ER. I’d like to limit the answers to dentistry only if possible.

Did your friend have prescription painkillers from the dentist?
If so, I think the dentist was within bounds.
If not, I think the least he could have done was offer to phone in a script to a 24 hour pharmacy.
Ans yes, if I was hallucinating from pain and not in possession of prescription grade pain killers, I would go to the ER.

She never said if she had pills or not but, with that much pain, I assume this was a surprise to her and she didn’t have any. And he didn’t offer any help whatsoever.

It seems like common sense that if her pain was unbearable she should have gone to the ER without needing to be told by anyone.

Did she think the doctor should get out of bed and go to his office and see her in the middle of the night?

It’s 2 AM? She’s lucky he answered the call.

I feel the same way. She maybe left a voice mail with the answering service. In the meantime she could have been in the ER.

I have 29 norcos left from my surgery. I could get through the night, but they scare the crap out of me.

I don’t know of any dentist that is on call 24 hours a day. Most dentists have a nurse or tech that works hand in hand with them and I doubt he could have called one in at 2 a.m.
There are no drugstores open at 2 a.m. with a pharmacist on duty either. So he could not have written her a pain medicine prescription.

As others have pointed out she should have made her way to an ER,I have never heard of a Dentist responding to anything after his/her office hours.
I find it amazing she got the Dentist to answer that late at night.

I had two physicians come to the ER for my kids after hours. One was an osteopath; the other I can’t recall what kind of dr. he was but he said, “you got me out of the movie theater with my son.”

Doctors are different, especially if it might or could be a life or death situation, or they might be the one on call for the ER that night.
