Seen any good movies on Netflix lately?

Asked by Kardamom (33494points) June 9th, 2015

I’m looking for some good movies and/or series on Netflix. I love most British dramas, period pieces and/or current stuff. I like mystery series and police dramas; and comedies; and dramas. Quirky stuff is good too (example: Amelie and As It Is In Heaven) and so is animation, as long as it’s really good (examples: The Fantastic Mr. Fox and The Nightmare Before Christmas and The Box Trolls).

The stuff doesn’t have to be British, although you know I love it. I like American and Canadian stuff, and I like a lot of foreign movies too, as long as they’ve got decent subtitles that I can actually see on the screen.

I don’t care for shoot-em-up blockbusters, nor do I care for most action-themed movies, most sci-fi (except Star Trek) or potty-mouthed teenage boy humor movies. Here’s some examples of movies and actors I didn’t care for, if this helps: Pulp Fiction, anything with Arnold Swharzenegger, or Chuck Norris, or Will Ferrell. I don’t really care for magical fantasy movies either. I only watched Harry Potter because Alan Rickman is in it and I fast forwarded to his parts, the rest was meh.

Movies, shows and actors that I do like: Benedict Cumberbatch, Downton Abbey, Lost in Translation, Sense and Sensibility, Doc Martin, anything to do with Sherlock Holmes, Michael Caine, Steve Coogan, The King’s Speech, Mrs. Brown, Helen Mirren, Cate Blanchett, Judi Densch, Ben Kingsley, the Masterpiece Theater mini-series Bleak House, The Murdoch Mysteries, and Call the Midwife.

Got any suggestions?

No. they never seem to have what I want to watch. They just give me suggestions in the same genre.

In Your Eyes

I assume you’ve watched the Prime Suspect mysteries (oh it was on Play It Now last year, I guess not now), and Alan Partridge?

How about Broadchurch? The Office (British version)?

I second Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt. And I also liked In Your Eyes.

I liked the quirky surreal French comedy The Fairy.

There’s Charade.

The British series Black Mirror and the movie This Is Where I Leave you. Enjoyed both immensely.

* Broadchurch – I 2nd @Zaku‘s vote for this. It is right up your alley. TV ‘whodunit’ series set in an English sea town and stars David Tennant of Dr. Who fame.
* Happy Valley – TV series about a female police officer in Yorkshire
* Top of the Lake – TV series about a pre-teen girl who attempts suicide after finding out she is pregnant in New Zealand and the investigation conducted by a female detective
* Thérèse – French period movie starring Audrey Tautou
* Death in Paradise – TV series set in the Caribbean with a Scotland Yard detective on assignment.

I suggest Freaks and Geeks, it’s a short lived comedy-drama series set in the 1980’s. One of the best shows about teenagers I’ve ever seen, it’s hilarious but also down to earth.

And I’m not sure if it’s on Netflix, but I recently saw a movie called “The Babadook”. It’s a thriller/suspense movie that’s genuinely heartfelt

I recently watched a great 70s film titled the Conversation. It stars Gene Hackman as a surveillance man who becomes morally conflicted when he realizes he’s become witness to a murder plot.

Not sure if it’ll be up your alley, but I quite enjoyed Peaky Blinders. A newish Netflix series (really a BBC series, but Netflix have the exclusive on it here in the States). Set in Birmingham, England just after World War I, it’s about a street gang comprised largely of returning war veterans. Cillian Murphy is the star of the show, and Tom Hardy features in the second season.

I notice someone suggested Marco Polo but I honestly don’t think you’d enjoy it from what you’ve said above. I mean I dug it, but it’s made pretty much solely with the male 18 – 35 demographic in mind (lots of violence, lots of blood, lots of tits).

Thanks everybody!

My mom also suggested Kimmy Schmidt. I think that might be next on my list.

@Pied_Pfeffer We loved Happy Valley (ironic title, huh?) and Broadchuch is on my list. Will check out your other picks.

@rockfan Loved Freaks and Geeks. I watched that during it’s original run. I don’t think you were even born then, Lol. Not into horror movies, though.

@Darth_Algar I love Gene Hackman so I’ll check out The Conversation. My mom and I tried to watch Peaky Blinders, at the suggestion of a friend who “knew” I would love the Irish accents. We saw one episode and vowed to never watch it again. Couldn’t stand the modern music blaring in the background, it seemed totally out of place. The haircuts on the men all looked like they were taken directly from a California hipster bar, and it was way too violent, but not in a realistic kind of way, it was like a blockbuster shoot-em-up. Might check out Marco Polo though.

Again, thanks everybody for all of the suggestions.

Brian’s Song, the original.

You might enjoy Lucky Number Slevin.  It has some violence, but it’s more of a madcap-noir-case-of-mistaken-identity thing than an action movie.  I can’t remember how much language there is.  It’s got a strong cast (including Ben Kingsley) and sharp writing. Observe (NSFW)

@fundevogel Wow, a Ben Kingsley movie that I haven’t yet heard of. Thanks for the tip.

@Dutchess_III I saw Brian’s song a few times when I was a kid. Super sappy.

BUT IT’S A TRUE STORY! (Did you see the one that had Billy Dee playing Gayle Sayers? They did a remake at some point that wasn’t nearly as good.)

Kardamom's avatar

@Dutchess_III I saw the original version, from around 1973. My friend across the street loved that movie and cried, but she was a sports nut. I thought it was super sappy. I cried during Old Yeller, though.

Have you seen The Big Chill? How you like that would change what I might suggest.

Kardamom's avatar

@filmfann I didn’t like The Big Chill. I thought all of the characters were too pretentious and unrealistic. I don’t care for Jeff Goldblum.

Here’s some more examples of what I liked and didn’t like:

The Imitation Game – liked

Paddington – liked

Titanic- ughhh!

Venus (Peter O’Toole) – liked

Any superhero movies – didn’t like or didn’t watch, because I don’t care for the genre

Becoming Jane – liked

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (both British and Swedish versions) – liked

Pirates of the Caribbean – boring

Love Actually – loved!

Shawshank Redemption – liked and have seen it at least 10 times

Something’s Gotta Give – loved!

Any movie with Ben Stiller – cringed or didn’t watch

Brokeback Mountain – liked

The Illusionist – liked

The Twilight Trilogy – tolerated

Ghost World – liked

My First Mister – liked

Boyhood – felt depressed and like I had lost 5 hours of my life that I will never get back

Anchorman – one of the worst movies I ever almost watched all the way to the end before I had to switch it off because it was so bad

Frankenweenie – depressed me and made me wonder why anyone would allow their child to see it. Felt disturbed for days after seeing it

Hotel Transylvania – loved it, laughed a lot

rockfan's avatar

@Kardamom If you thought Frankenweenie was disturbing, I can only imagine what you think of Nightmare Before Christmas lol

Excellent Welsh police murder mystery drama Hinterland
My latest find. Each episode is 11/2 hours long so satisfying film length. Each episode complete in itself.

Kardamom's avatar

@rockfan I thought NBC was sweet and cute and funny. Frankenweenie was awful.

@Adagio Loved Hinterland.

filmfann's avatar

Home For The Holidays
This Is Where I Leave You
The Family Stone
The Royal Tennanbaums

rockfan's avatar

@Kardamom that’s surprising, I think NBC is way more disturbing and weird than Frankenweenie
