What should I watch on BBC America?

Asked by Kardamom (33494points) June 20th, 2015

After haggling with our cable company (they were charging us for stuff that we weren’t getting) we managed to get it all sorted out and now we get BBC America. Yay!

What should we watch?

Here are some British shows that we’ve already seen and enjoyed: Doc Martin, The Midsomer Murders, Inspector George Gently, Happy Valley, Bletchley Circle, Sherlock, Hinterland, Land Girls, The Paradise, Call The Midwife, Copper, and Ripper Street.

We watched one episode of Peaky Blinders and didn’t like it at all.

Based upon this information, what would you suggest?

Broadchurch
QI
Doctor Who and Torchwood (obviously)

Have you seen Absolutely Fabulous? Required viewing.

Watch Sherlock again, because everyone should always watch Sherlock again.

I’ve heard Luther is very good. It’s on my list of things to watch eventually.

If you don’t start watching Broadchurch, I will unfollow you and never respond to any of your questions ever again. It has your name written all over it.

There are several cooking shows listed on the BBC America schedule that might be of interest.

If The Graham Norton Show is new to you, it might be worth watching a few episodes. It’s cheesy, but I started watching it as an introduction to the British culture. Some of the guests are household names in the UK who just never made it to the US.

One of my favorite shows is QI. It’s intellectual and quirky. It’s also another case of getting familiar with well-known UK performers, usually comedians.

There are some other shows on the BBC America schedule that look interesting, but I haven’t seen them.

As a side note, you might get a kick out of watching Come Dine with Me. It’s the typical “reality” show where over-the-top contestants compete against each other, but I think you would get a kick out of seeing what the average UK people choose to serve and foods that are common here in the US are alien to many of them. Plus, it’s fascinating to see how kitchen designs differ. Many of the episodes are available on YouTube.

Yes. It’s good. but not great. They tend to do a lot of repeats. And although there are some good programs, there are far too many commercials.

As a confirmed Anglophile, I watch everything I can on this channel. I find the writing and acting superb. I do prefer its contemporary comedies, dramas and mystery series over period pieces.

If you like cars, humor, ridiculous competitions, and having a glimpse at a variety of countries, you should try Top Gear.

Would You Rather is funny too. I don’t watch it regularly. It’s similar to our late night shows sort of.

I loved Peaky Blinders. Another vote for QI and Broadchurch . I don’t know the channel but I’m familiar with BBC shows. Is Downtown Abbey on that channel? I like that one too.

The new Doctor Who is nothing like the old floppy-hat, long-scarf bohemian you used to see on PBS in the ‘80s. Give it a try, and I think you’ll enjoy the new Who now that it’s got good writing and an actual production budget.

The British version of Top Gear was the best version, though I’m not sure if that’s still true with Jeremy Clarkson getting sacked. Still, it’s a show for gearheads.
