In honor of Father's Day, can we raise a glass to all the fathers and father-figures in our life?

Asked by cookieman (41845points) June 21st, 2015 from iPhone

Not just the bio-dads, but any Dad, Papi, Papa, Bah, Uncle, Older Brother, or Grandfather that helped to raise us and taught us what’s what.

And please, tell us a story about yours.

Three cheers. Hip, hip…

Wish I could invite my father…

I raise my glass and give thanks to every man who, by word and deed, helped make me a man. Starting with my dad who, at 53, died far too soon, there were lots of them in both my personal and work lives.

I just did have a small beer. So I’ll give you a ‘hurrah’. My dad was amazing. Served in the Merchant Navy at the end part of WWII. Reinlisted to help in Europe after the war. Stayed in service of his country for 22 years. Then continued to work tirelessly for another 20 or so years to support his wife of over 50 years and brood of 9 kids

I hated my father.
Want to know how I got these scars? My father, was a drinker…and a fiend. And one night, he goes off craaaazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen to defend herself. He does not like that. Not…one…bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. He turns to me, and he says, “Why so serious?”. Comes at me with the knife, “Why so serious?!”. Sticks the blade in my mouth, “Let us put a smile on that face.” Aaaand, why so serious?

I don’t know how to follow that. Sounds like a terrible, loathsome creature..not a dad.

My dad isn’t perfect, but he provided for us. He deserves a toast as well. Some of my best memories from childhood involve the times when he was actually around.

@ragingloli, I’m so, so sorry you were forced to endure all that. Makes me realize once more how fortunate I was to have the dad I did. He wasn’t perfect, but I realize now how unprepared he must have been to be a parent at 25, and how how over the years he did the best he did to mentor me and my brother.

Thanks Dad!
I remember the rule of 72 for interest rates; I don’t argue with fools; and I don’t do anything to excess.
Your advice has served me well.

“Gambol’s Bodyguard: Yo, Gambol, there’s somebody here for you. They say they just killed the Joker.

Gambol’s Bodyguard: They brought the body.

[a body bag is brought in and dropped on the table; Gambol unzips it, revealing Joker’s face]

Gambol: So. For dead, that’s 500…

The Joker: [sitting up and sticking a blade in Gambol’s mouth] How ‘bout alive?

[Joker’s men hold the bodyguards]

The Joker: You wanna know how I got these scars? My father, was a drinker, and a fiend. And one night, he goes off crazier than usual. Mommy gets the kitchen knife to defend herself. He doesn’t like that. Not. One. Bit. So, me watching, he takes the knife to her, laughing while he does it. He turns to me and says, “Why so serious?” Comes at me with the knife. “WHY SO SERIOUS?” He sticks the blade in my mouth… “Let’s put a smile on that face.” And…

[glancing at thug]

The Joker: Why so serious?

[kills Gambol]”
