What is one of your favorite pieces of art?

Asked by Kardamom (33494points) June 24th, 2015

I think a similar question was asked several years ago, but our membership has changed somewhat, so I’d like to know what types of art, and which if any, specific pieces of art do you current folks like/love?

I’ve always been fond of this piece by Vermeer

I also like this Japanese woodblock print by Kawase Hasui

And I like a lot of the ceramics from the Arts and Crafts movement.

What do you like?

I like Magritte’s night sky.

4 out of 5 great picks, though I prefer Rembrandt’s self portraits. I have 2 I’d like to add. The first is straight up over the top propaganda, and the 2nd is one of the most powerful statements ever rendered by a brush.

Bust of a Young Jew by Rembrandt at the Kimbell Museum in Fort Worth. I stare at it in never-ceasing amazement every time I visit it. You stand a foot from it and look closely in one eye, and you see a tiny daub of whitish paint. You stand six feet back and that daub is pure sunshine. Incredible.

I never got over my fascination for M. C. Escher’s

What Tiffany could do with normally mundane glass is more than I can wrap my mind around. I’d love to visit the studios of Orient and Flume to see just how it’s done.

I love the dreamy quality of almost anything done in the Impressionist style.

What a beautiful Hopper, @jca!

Anything by Mucha. I have these two ladies hanging in my living room. When my oldest daughter hit her teenage years I turned the ladies so the were back to back.

Also, my avatar is a Mucha.

Most anything in the sensuous Art Nouveau style @Dutchess_III.

I have a couple of fine quality Maxfield Parrish prints I bought for a song and spent $100’s framing. Rubaiyat is one.

Your last link just led back to the Q. I’d like to see pics of your prints, and the frames.

Rubaiyat
Mine is framed in a color similar to this. Very striking.

Edit
Salmon Run seems closer to the color. Probably slightly pinker. Matches one of the colors in the painting exactly.

There is a sketch Norman Rockwell did, of a boy lying on his stomach reading. Behind him was a collage of all kinds of figures out of various fairy tales…Little Bo Peep, Mother Goose, Aladdin’s lamp, etc. It is SO striking, but I can’t find it. I have it in a large hard cover book I picked up at auction.

I’ve recently taken a liking to anything by Dale Chihuly.

I’ve always loved Wanderer Above the Sea of Fog by Caspar David Friedrich.

I like lots of art, and I tend to like things for their unique qualities, so I don’t have a way to say I have favorites, without listing hundreds of things I really like.

I like architecture, sculpture, and I tend to like romantic and beautiful things.

The Diego Rivera murals in the Detroit Institute of Art are stunning.

It’s like going to the Sistine Chapel but the subject is familiar, modern life.

I love all art. My favorite style is French Impressionist. I have one of the Starry Night series on the wall of my office.

Dale Chihuly at the Bellagio in Vegas is amazing, @Yetanotheruser. I think this is in the permanent collection of the St. Louis Art Museum.

^^^ Looks like glass Jellies.

It’s kinda scarey to stand under, @Dutchess_III. But if it fell on you, you’d never know. Probably be a liquid in a matter of seconds. Liking art glass as I do, I just stood there gaping at it.

O. It’s hanging from the ceiling. Some stupid ad came up and blocked the whole bottom half of it. Had t right click / view picture. I hope they have a railing on the floor around its position!

Georges Braque – Man with a Guitar

When I saw it in Paris, I cried.

Dutchess_III's avatar

^^^^ That is lost on me. Can you explain it, please?

cazzie's avatar

Oh, WOW, @Megan64 that is stunning.

Henri Rousseau’s The Dream is my favorite painting of all time. It’s in the MoMA but I’ve never seen it. I’d probably start crying.
