I suppose you deserve thanks for passing it past us,but it’s the sort of techno dance stuff in which I have no interest. As for the lyrics————-well, never mind. It will be interesting to read other comments. I’m curious though as to why it appeals to you and how you arrived at a taste for it. I grant you a GQ for putting it out there.
@stanleybmanly I’ve always liked alternative music, and I like the cinematic feeling of her sound especially. But it’s definitely not the kind of music I like for passive listening. Here’s another one by St. Vincent that I really like. And this one as well.
It is not my flavor.
I have been having fun with this lately.

It is not my usual flavor either, but it is fun, kicky, and energetic. What do you think of it? I find the woohas contagious.
@Here2_4 I love the tUnE-yArDs. Her voice definitely takes some getting used to though
Rodgers and Hammerstein are spinning in their graves.
@Pachy Fair enough. People said the same thing about 60’s music.
I don’t think Rodgers and Hammerstein’s work was very good to begin with though, it was kind of lazy and predictable. Cookie cutter stuff in my opinion
I like St Vincent a lot – I saw her play a few years ago, and she was great. Funny to hear her music described here as “techno dance stuff”. :)
@Here2_4 Now that’s catchy. And the Pee Wee Herman set themed video is wonderful. The song is perfect for little kids to face one another in pairs and play the clap-clap game. I’m going to show it to the wife so she can pass it on at her Montessori school. Thank you!
@ragingloli I don’t see how that music could be described as bland. But to each their own
Not my flavor either. The lyrics are ridiculous, make no sense and the music has a few nice melodious moments but all in all I score a 2. lol
I will say the girl/artist looks like Audrey Hepburn, bonus points for her cuteness but her talent is pretty abysmally bereft. Granted this is coming from a 55 yr. old that is not into all the latest pop music. Now gimme some Green Day or Hootie and the Blowfish or Red Hot Chili peppers.
I like my rock genre pure and simple. haha
@Coloma You should check out more of her music, she’s definitely talented
@rockfan I will…I bet my daughter knows of her, she keeps me abreast of cool new music as she is susper diverse in her tastes.
Contrived, pretentious, trying too hard, cliche ridden angst.
I’m sure her Mother loves her though.
But I guess you could say that all alternative music tries too hard
@rockfan Alternative music, as with comedy, has to be edgy & different, but to the artist involved, the material must come naturally. Trick is, not to try at all, instinctive, comes from within.
@ucme Have you listened to any of Tom Waits music? I love his music, even though I admit he tries ridiculously hard. Same thing with The Beatles, Pink Floyd, The Who, Bob Dylan, etc. Even if someone tries hard to make good music, as long as it’s a sincere effort with good intentions, then I can certainly appreciate it.
@rockfan Yeah & there’s absolutely nothing wrong in that, enjoy what you want for whatever reasons. For me, i’ve never cared who the artist is or whether their particular brand of music is “cool” or in vogue. I’m all about the song, the tune, the lyrics, if they all grab my attention, then that’s good enough for me.
That’s the kind of music they should play for terrorists and during police stand-offs. “I confess! I’ll tell you everything! Please just turn it off!”
I really, really like St. Vincent’s smart vibe, but it’s kind of cold for me. She needs to loosen up. More swing, more funk.
@Here2_4 I have been having fun with this lately.
I LOVE Tuneyards!! I want to have Merrill Garbus’s baby!
I FREAKED out when I figured out what she was doing with the sampler. Music is just busting out of her, even with the simplest tools, she mixes fantastic songs.
She gives a good demo here of what she can do live with just two people]
I love the sax chorus on her Studio 360 videos
@cheebdragon Yeah I can see why some people might hate her music. But her music just clicks for me, especially the songs “Paris is Burning” and “Marry Me”
Not my favorite from St. Vincent.
And not my favorite from baroque pop.
I’ll take Nick Drake or Belle & Sebastian over St. Vincent any day.
I like St. Vincent because they’re always trying out new things. They’re creative and experimental and it never sounds the same from one song to the next.
You said above that this track doesn’t work well for “passive listening,” and that’s fairly true. This is something I understand a lot better in terms of, say, wine. A low-quality wine can be smooth, tasty, and easy-drinking, while a high-quality wine might put off some drinkers with its stronger flavors. I think that track works better as an experiment or an art piece than as a song. Most of the music I enjoy most has a “smooth” quality. (Easy listening. Maybe I’m getting old??) For instance, my favorite St. Vincent song is Prince Johnny.
With all due respect, @rockfan, my reply to your comment “wasn’t very good, “lazy and predictable” is…
hahahahahahaha…
@Pachy Huh? Don’t understand what you’re trying to say.
It’s hilarious looking back at this question now because its absolutely nuts that I said that about
Rodgers and Hammerstein. I’ve grown to love their work in the past couple of years
It’s the sort of mistake everyone makes initially when they are truly passionate about music, the immediate dismissal of that which they assume of no interest to them.
