Rust removal from a fire escape?

Asked by finkelitis (1917points) July 18th, 2008

I’m charge of getting my building’s fire escape repainted. I got bids, and they’re ridiculously expensive. I think the main problem is that there’s a lot of rust to strip off. Is this something that we can do on our own? How would we go about it?

It would probably be best to remove the rust yourself, or with the help of some friends, and then once it is all prepped, have a professional come and paint it. As for removing the rust, not really sure as how you would go about removing it. You could ask around at a local hardware store for a rust removal product.

You might rent a sandblaster and try that or sand it down by hand. You can buy Rustoleum primer and paint that is made for rusted metal. Sand it and paint it thats the formula.
