One of the things I would never expect my dog or any dog to eat would be brussel sprouts! Has your dog ever had a taste for unconventional food for canines?

She is so greedy she has even eaten sweet-sour Thailand sauce to get to the chicken. But brussel sprouts! Oh, she once ate a piece of blue cheese too! Please share weird stuff your dogs have eaten, things not expected of our furry friends.

Not sure how “weird” this is, but my dog loves homemade pizelles (Italian waffle cookies).
Also a big fan of pizza crust.
One of mine ears broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, whatever I’m chopping (and dropping). The other loves peas and carrots.
I am a sloppy person when I cook. My dogs love it.
@chyna mine will eat almost anything if he thinks it is people food. However, he will somehow manage to eat around all the green beans left among the scraps.
Had one that loved lettuce and bananas.
My current dog would eat anything I give her if she thought it was food. Then after she swallowed it, she might reconsider, but yeah, she’d eat anything. Of course she never chews either.
One of my old dogs loved carrots and rabbit alfalfa pellets.
I had a cat that went nuts for Cantaloupe and had to have a little dish of minced melon every time I cut one. Here at the ranch now the dog likes kale, carrots and eats clover. Being a ranch dog she also loves to eat horse poo and chew on hoof trimmings which we discourage but ya know, mmmm, nothing like a nice chewy piece of horse poo and a slice of hoof. lol
Well, my cat will eat scraps of banana that the kids drop on the floor….
My grandmother owned such a dog, and that dog was the happy recipient of as much of my cauliflower & brussel sprouts as I could smuggle under the table.
Actually, dogs eating veggies isn’t really unconventional. Dogs are omnivores in a sense in that, even in the wild, they eat non animal foods, such as grains and whatever. Not their first choice, obviously, but their digestive tract allows it.
Cats, on the other hand, are obligate carnivores which means they don’t eat anything but meat. Except for my retarded cat.
Your cat isn’t alone. My wife’s cat loved broccoli with canned tuna. And I don’t mean mixed up together as I once insisted to the wife. She put the 2 items in separate bowls to prove her point, and sure enough he moved dutifully between the 2 bowls.
My dog loves roasted brussels sprouts. She also begs for homemade kale chips when we make them.
Milo will eat, sparingly, a bit of scrambled egg and fried ham and several small mouthfuls of rare filet mignon.
My dogs loved peas fresh out of the garden. They preferred it that I shelled them but if I gave them the pod they’d chew it until they got the peas out.
Seems to me like many dogs eat almost anything that seems quasi-edible. Rotten flesh in the gutter – yum! Special treat! Cat poop? Special treat! (seriously)
@Zaku Yes… My kids even developed gourmet names for our dog’s favorites.
Old cat poop: Crunchy Brownie Bites.
Fresh steaming cat poop: Warm and Chewy Brownie Bites.
Ew!
@snowberry Ha ha ha! That’s great! And horrifying! ;-)
@Dutchess_III You’re right that cats are carnivores, and apparently can’t really digest carbs from grains, so a lot of dry cat food is not really appropriate for them. But they do eat some plants, and will even go seek them out. Grasses and leaves, though maybe for teeth cleaning and herbal effects rather than for calories. I had a cat who would devour any poinsettia in reach, heedless of rumors of them being poisonous (she lived to be about 24 years old). I’ve also had specific cats who were eager for cantaloupe, strawberries, eggs (animal protein so makes sense), and corn- and potato-crisps (though really for the salty coatings).
Oh, and as for dogs eating vegetables – when kids were sent to the kids’ table when the adult dining room was too full, which had access to the dog, he finished off many unwanted vegetables of any kind.
Well, my old girl will eat paper money. At least she tries to. I’ve never allowed her to carry out this plan.
My puppy eats paper, flowers, insects, cigarettes, socks, and, as of yesterday, leashes.
My dad’s dog had a taste for wasps. It stopped suddenly with a yelp and a quick drink from the water bowl.
My doberman eats anything. Except lettuce (unless it has dressing on it, then he’ll eat it.) Pickles, olives, watermelon rinds, banana peels – anything.
Hubby and I made up some home stuffed jalapeƱo peppers. Our chihuahua mixes ate ‘em up, gasping, and were willing to eat more, but we took pity on them.
One of my friend’s dogs, that I often take care of, eats cucumbers. She got the dog across the street hooked on them when she came over for a sleepover.
Another friend’s dog, eats litter covered cat poo. Canine almond roca as my friend calls it. They have to keep the cat little box locked up in the closet with a baby gate across the doorway.
We had a dog that loved to eat ripe raspberries off of the plants growing in our back yard.
@Kardamom Gah, yep, almond roca. One of my old dogs was a cat poop fiend. He always knew when he was busted, sneaking down the stairs with cat litter stuck on his nose and the twitching eyebrow routine goin’ on. haha
