If you were breaking out of prison, wouldn't you have a better plan?

In light of the two prisoners that broke out of the Clinton Correctional facility about 3 weeks ago, I was thinking of how stupid their lack of planning was. One prisoner was shot and killed near the prison. I would definitely have a real plan, and then a back up plan if I were planning an escape. It seems that most prisoners are caught near the place they escaped from.
My plan would be to get as far away as possible, by plane, train or automobile and change my appearance.
What would your escape plan consist of?
Remember, if you are going to be using this plan in the future, you may not want to share it.

Stealthily kill a guard, dress in his uniform, hide his body, then casually walk out.
Enter the sewers, and leave the city underground.
Making plans can be difficult if you are not privvy to the necessary information…assuming you have been transported to a facility a certain distance away from your home, which is not unusual.
I am sure their plan began with Get The Hell Out Of Prison, and afterwards they see what comes.
I think they did pretty well, considering.
They had a plan – it was to have Joyce Mitchell pick them up. However, she chickened out and instead, went to the ER under the pretense of anxiety attacks. She has now been arrested and so has another C.O. As far as what the plan was with Joyce Mitchell, law enforcement will probably get a confession out of her. It’s come to light recently that they were going to kill her husband, for what, I don’t know. Did they want to take her with them? Would she be “baggage” or could she help them? She was in dangerous territory, playing around (literally and figuratively) with prisoners.
Probably chip away at a wall for 15 or so years with a rock hammer hidden in a bible and conceal the hole with a poster. Then assume the identity of the fictional person used as the scapegoat in a money laundering scheme but run south of the border with all of the laundered cash. A trail of evidence would be handed to the press implicating the warden just in time for that to take center stage allowing my escape.
I’d tell you, but I may need it in the future.
As @jca stated the weak link turned out to be the woman accomplice. Before calling them stupid, it might be a good idea to remember THEY GOT OUT and remained at large for damned near 2 weeks, and one of them is STILL loose in defiance of what is the largest manhunt since Osama bin Laden. At least one of them was smart enough to split up, and I’m betting it’s the one who wasn’t shot. If he’s ever found, it will be interesting to see how far away in both time and distance that might be.
I agree with @filmfann. They could mostly only theorize about what they’d do after they got out; but since they were the only prisoners to ever escape that facility—and then manage to allude hundreds of searchers for three weeks—I’d say they did pretty well.
Given my planning abilities, I’d have been nabbed rising from my cot.
I’m a big tough man with a big tough plan, gonna spend my life with a big tough wife
I’m a big tough man with a big tough plan, gonna take a whirl with a big tough girl
I’m a big tough man and my name is Stan, gonna take a ride with my big tough bride
I’m a big tough man with a big tough plan, gonna spend my day in a big tough way
One plan…Five Guns West!
I’d say they actually did pretty well – at least one did, so far. They were in for life and had no intention of ever going back alive. One successfully chose “Death By Cop”.
The manhunt is costing over a $1M per day. They have managed to penalize US taxpayers to the tune of over $20M so far.
I’d say they were successful.
First, I would make myself invisible…
They had a great plan to get out of the prison, they just didn’t have a clue after the getaway driver didn’t show up. That is tough rugged territory. You need a compass, a map, food and water, and then your survival isn’t guaranteed. It is a tough place.
@chyna Laughs, I’m a ways south of there, but usually I’d be up there for the horse show. But I’ll make sure the doors are locked just in case. The surviving guy is from this area.
He’s the one that has some survivalist skills.
There have been some interesting articles in the NY Times about it. One was on the tools they used and Thursday they had the confession of Gene Palmer, the C.O. who was just arrested for helping them. If you guys are interested, I’ll link.
Actually the best plan is to stay safe close to the prison (preferably a basement) where someone will bring you food.
Wait for Big Brother to start back up and bounce on eviction night.
Diane Downs escaped from the same jail my mom did ten years at. Diane Downs hid five blocks away and only got busted when she decided to leave where she was staying. .
@Adirondackwannabe You said it. “It is a tough place.” And the weather is making it a lot tougher: cold rain for days. Unless he is holded up in a hunting cabin he must be miserable.
Have you seen the thermal imager equipped helicopters yet? The instrumentation package looks a bit like a soccer ball and is attached to the front. They can detect a temperature difference with a resolution finer than 0.05 C.
I’m thinking maybe he’s not in the area they are searching, @LuckyGuy, because I have been thinking (since Friday when the other one was shot) that if they have the thermal imaging and they’re not picking up anything, he is maybe not there.
@LuckyGuy That camera would be fun just to watch the wildlife. Technology is fun in some ways.
@jca That is a possibility. Another possibility is that he’s the same temperature as the background.
@Adirondackwannabe Yes it is fun. You can see so many interesting things. You can easily find occupied bird and squirrel nests, You can watch other animals watching you. You can see where they paused or bedded down. It’s a different world!
