If they post memes like this, shouldn't they at least know the words?

Asked by Judi (40025points) June 27th, 2015 from iPhone

Once again, I see a meme that says something like, Should the National Anthem be played at sporting events? One share means you agree.
Do you think that people who post things like this should at least know the words?
Hey I’m all for patriotism but blind patriotism scares me.

Yeah, it would help I suppose, although all thos bs things like that I usually ignore. Like when they show you a picture of something tragic, and then it goes on to say that if you don’t share it, you’re a monster. I hate that shite, reminds me of chain letters.

And I see people use the word meme for just about everything now haha.

Ok. Maybe my definition of a meme is off. I am referring to a one scentence post with picture usually created for distribution on social media. If there is another/better name for it I’ll use it.
These ignorant posts usually come from family members or old friends who are basically harmless but pretty ignorant. It’s not a huge irritation until I get that sense that they somehow think they’re more American than me because they’re conservative and I’m not. Then I want to say, “you don’t even know the frickin’ words!!

That IS what gets to me about it. Like whatever the subject is, if you don’t share or like the picture, then you’re automatically against the suggested cause or idea.

One does not simply become a patriot.

I think it’s more likely that The Star Spangled Banner would be rewritten, with offending verses removed, than that it will stop being used as an anthem in sporting events or anywhere else. This has already been done in the US and in other countries (ever hear the version of God Save the Queen that crows about crushing rebellious Scots?).

So, it can be made less racist, but it’s always going to be a song about war. Honestly, I think that’s fitting for the US. It would almost be dishonest to remove war from the American national anthem.

Edit: Hey, I didn’t actually answer your question!
Yes, people should certainly understand an argument before loudly shouting it down. In your position, I would probably leave a brief quote from the anthem as a comment.

I just asked if he knew the words.

That drives me nuts. It’s one of those mindless things that get passed around as though there is some war on the national anthem being played at sporting events.

When I see it I simply say, “They do play the national anthem at sporting events.”
