Do you have flood insurance and how much do you pay for it?

Asked by StaceyD (215points) June 28th, 2015

Two years ago, we purchased a very affordable house on a lake. The views are priceless and it is not a known area for flooding. But I have been concerned as I read more about rivers and lakes flooding local areas. I thought this was usually a concern for people who live near an ocean or bay but I guess I am wrong. I have been reading about flood insurance and it seems there is a lot our regular homeowners policy might not cover. http://marineagency.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-flood-insurance/

I was surprised to learn the basement would not be covered, as it is underground. With the summer here and possible hurricanes and storms, I think we should get flood insurance. Do you have it and what does it cost? I have heard it can be quite costly, but then I am thinking of the risk we are taking by not getting it. Any help is appreciated.

Here you go knock it out. Flood Insurance Website

We have flood insurance and the closest water (a stream) is quarter of a mile away and 25 feet lower.

I’ve been out of that business for a bit, but it ran between $500 and $800 bucks a year. I used to be a lender for a National Bank, we had to verify every property wasn’t in a flood zone.

I don’t. I live atop a hill, and I figure if we are flooded, then the entire Bay Area would be under water also, and it won’t matter whether anyone had flood insurance or not.

No flood insurance in my neck of the woods here in CA. I have always had properties on a hill too away from major bodies of water but the fire insurance is out of control. It has gone up 170% in the last couple years with the drought and wild fire risks living in a high fire risk zone here in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Not sure what’s worse, flood or fire. Hope to never find out.

I guess you could call it that. I call it boat insurance. Comprehensive is prohibitive. I cover the people aboard, the hull and standing rigging only, and damage done to other vessels, passengers and crew.

Absolutely! I have had it for every house I have lived in. There is some stat that almost 50% of floods happen “no flood” zones. In fact, the one time I used the insurance was when my house flooded during a storm in a place that most of my friends who lived in the area didn’t have flood and my realtor when I purchased even thought I was ridiculous to buy it.

Right now I’m paying just over $400 a year for it, but I have 4,000 living sq. ft. I get the top coverage under the regular policy, I think that covers me to $250k. I could have bought additional, but I didn’t. I also could have bought less coverage and probably paid half.

Everyone should buy it, it’s usually extremely reasonable unless you live in an area known to flood.

You shouldn’t be asking is what we pay, you should be calling your insurance and asking how much it is for your house.
