Can anyone tell me what the going rates for an infant in daycare are today?
I had a daycare in the 80’s, and I charged below market average, because most of my Moms were single moms and hell, they can’t afford outrageous daycare expenses.
I charged $50 a week for kids 2 and up
$60 for kids 1 to 2
$65 for infants.
What is the going rate today? My DIL is thinking of opening a home day care.

I think it would have to vary so much by geographic location that it is almost meaningless. Maybe look at ads in your area to see what it is near you.
I agree with @janbb. I was paying a private lady $60 per day but that was cheap for this area. When my daughter went to preschool, I paid $700 a month, I believe for 3 days or 4 days per week. This was one of the more affluent areas of the country, although not quite as affluent as NYC, just to show you the difference.
Holy shit @jca. I’m sorry, but that’s outrageous. I charged a little for a lot of kids. What is the point of even working if your take home is going to be $400 a month! (I’m exaggerating…)
@Dutchess_III: The preschool she was in has an infant program, a toddler program and a preschool program. At this point I don’t remember if she was in both toddler and preschool or just preschool. Regardless, it was a great school, with all kinds of programs for the kids, and you could drop them off as early as 7 and pick them up as late as 6:00 or 6:30 (not sure now what the latest pickup time was). Luckily I could afford it. I also work for my benefits, which are ample as I am a public servant.
When my sister worked at Symantec as the administrative assistant of one the higher-ups there the day care for her 3 year old son was over 50% of her income from full-time work. She would have actually had more money if she stayed at home on welfare instead of paying for childcare.
And this was a big place with about 20 kids that was actually licensed.
I bet that if it were the men who were having to get daycare in order to work, something, somehow, would have been done by now. I don’t know what. But that is insane.
Some corporations have on-site day care for their employees’ children. That’s helpful.
The weekly rate will vary, depending on the hours each child is taken care of. My mum is a child-minder, and she is paid $ 4,50 per child/hour. This is the rate around here, it is neither high nor low. The state pays if moms can’t afford to and can prove their need.
Thanks.
I think she’s going to go with $100 a week for an infant, which is cheap, but the mom is also a single mom, so my friend is leaning toward compassion. Same thing I did.
