What are the best islands to visit in Thailand?

Asked by nimarka1 (944points) July 1st, 2015

I’m going to Thailand in August and wanted some advice on island hopping for 8 days. We will also be visiting Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Pai.
We will be flying in to Phuket because it is much cheaper than Samui, and will be using it as a base for day trips. But my group wants to stay in 2–3 different Islands. We are looking for places that are less crowded, less touristy, clean beaches, clear water, good snorkeling, places to go hiking/exploring.
Please recommend what islands to visit, which beaches on those islands, any restaurants, hotels, and places that we should explore.
Any advice helps!
Thanks fluther!

I have no clue where you should go but I’m sending your question to some peeps that might have some ideas.

You might be best to ask this question on an Australian or NZ website, Thailand is a popular holiday destination down under. I have never been myself so I’m afraid I cannot help you.

We were in Phuket last year and it was lovely. But be aware, if you are going now, it’s the rainy season

Here are some islands around Phuket:

I have been to Phi Phi island and Phang Nga Bay. James Bond island is there (if you are a Bond fan). Beautiful, but snorkeling is iffy – the equipment might be moldy and the coral might be smashed. You can rent a boat to go scuba among undamaged coral.
