Happy Higgs Boson Day, everyone! Will you join me in celebrating the discovery of the "god" particle?

Asked by ragingloli (52206points) July 4th, 2015

3 years ago, scientists at CERN’s LHC discovered this particle.
It not only increased humanity’s knowledge of the universe, but also confirmed the accuracy of currently established scientific theory. Truly a momentous occasion.

Yay for science! Long may it reign!

Thanks for your con-CERN.

CERN-tainly sounds like something worth celebrating.

I stand with the agnostic particles who aren’t sure that it even exists. ;-o

What is this god particle? What makes it special? Does it sit in judgment of all other particles?

ragingloli's avatar

@Here2_4
The Higgs Boson is evidence for the Higgs Field, which gives mass to all other particles.

Here2_4's avatar

Oh. How often do these particles have to attend mass? I can’t believe it; a god particle, and it turns out to be catholic!

Pachy's avatar

None of the 16 (or so) GOP POTUS candidates has come out to say he believes there’s such a thing!

Here2_4's avatar

Why would they, @Pachy ? What about the Pope? Does he believe in the catholic god particle?

@Here2_4 Has a Protestant god particle been discovered yet? (Or, because Protestants don’t celebrate mass, is such a particle impossible?)

Who doesn’t like a nice perky boson?

janbb's avatar

@Haleth Maybe you and I can be boson buddies?

Haleth's avatar

@janbb I’m Higgs-cited about this friendship!

Here2_4's avatar

I am going to Higgs everyone close to my Boson, and whisper, “There, there”.

osoraro's avatar

@ragingloli I’m just glad Higgs was around to see it and get the Nobel. It was a truly touching moment when he was in the audience and the two teams made the announcement of the discovery.

And for those of you who don’t really understand, in physics this is a Really Big Deal. It’s as big as, say, the discovery of what makes up dark matter will be when it eventually happens.
