If people are so smart why do they do such stupid things?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23475points) July 5th, 2015

Such as text and drive?
Drive drunk?
Throw cigarette butts out the window, where they could easily start a fire in tinder dry areas?
Still talk on their cell phone while driving even though it’s illegal in most areas without a hands free set?
Get so upset over this gay marriage thing?
If people are so intelligent why do they still do these stupid things?

And if you truly don’t do any of these stupid things ,then good for you but a lot of intelligent people still do, just wondering WHY??????

Oh and the list can go on and on, why don’t intelligent people dim their headlights for on coming traffic?
Why do intelligent people do these things?

longgone's avatar

Because we are not as smart as we think. Because we’re distracted, overwhelmed, nervous, annoyed, careless, tired, overworked, frustrated, uneducated, scared and impatient….the list could go on and on.

Do you think any of these people plan to act recklessly? Are we (you and I) any different from them? I doubt it, and I’m doubting anyone who claims that only “everyone else” is doing stupid things. We are not that special. Actually, believing that we are is the most common fallacy. It’s why we don’t use sunscreen, why we smoke, and why we use our phones while driving. Other people get cancer and die in traffic accidents. We don’t – we’re special.

@longgone I never said I was exempt from doing stupid things, but I do try and learn from them not to keep doing them over and over.
One example when I drive my cell phone is OFF.

Your premise: that people are so smart is flawed. They’re not.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@marinelife I was trying to be nice, when I say this to people they always claim it aint them they are way to intelligent to do these stupid things, but it happens so much who is it then if we are so intelligent?

People can be very smart and very irrational simultaneously. It seems that more than intellect is required for sound judgement.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

@stanleybmanly Like maybe just a wee bit of common sense?
That the human race is losing at an alarming rate.

“I do try and learn from them not to keep doing them over and over.”

Do you think there are many people who would not say the same thing about themselves? I am even pretty sure we could all name one thing we are responsible about. For example, I wear sunscreen as soon as the sun is out. I think I’ve been sunburnt about twice, at the most.

Because you drive for a living, you are annoyed at people’s risk-taking in that area. I might be annoyed at your reckless behaviour in other contexts. I work with dogs a lot, and I get frustrated at people grabbing their dogs’ faces or letting children climb all over them. Those are accidents waiting to happen, and they can be deadly. We all have our soap box.

I feel like humans can be so smart that we’re stupid, if that makes sense. Like, a complete 180.

1.Quite the presumption that being born human should mean you are automatically born with intelligence.
2. Natures way to keep our numbers down.
3. God complex. (They think they shit gold)
4. Empty lives.

I really think it has to do with how people are raised. Were they encouraged to use common sense on the way up? Or not?

I was visiting my son and DIL the other day. I was going to walk with the kids to the park, but the 2 year old needed to get dressed. I asked if I could help them and was told yes.
“And her clothes are on the first shelf!”
Ok.
So we’re looking in the closet and the 7 year old says, “This is her shelf.”
OK. So I picked up a pair of shorts with an elastic waist, eyeballed it, called it good and put them on the 2 year old. They fit just fine. The weren’t falling or sagging or anything.
We come out of the bedroom and my DIL sort of freaks out.
“THOSE ARE A SIZE 5! SHE WEARS A SIZE 2!!”
I sort of snapped and said, “They fit!!”
But she had to change her shorts anyway.

Where is the common sense in that? And where did the lack of it come from?

If you give a kid a glass of orange juice, it’s good.
If you give a kid a homemade Popsicle made out of orange juice, it’s a “snack” so it’s bad.

Aside from the last item on the list not being stupid, people the everything above it because intelligence doesn’t equate to wisdom. I person might be smart enough to launch rockets but lack wisdom to know he should use jack stands and block his wheels before he tries to tackle changing his own oil.

To do something like still talk or text when it is illegal is simply to think they do not need to follow the law, they can drive or text and do it without crashing and to have to pull over to answer the phone is too much work and an inconvenience to them.

Because they are people.

People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
So we’re different colours
And we’re different creeds
And different people have different needs
It’s obvious you hate me
Though I’ve done nothing wrong
I never even met you
So what could I have done
I can’t understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand
People are people so why should it be
You and I should get along so awfully
Help me understand
Now you’re punching and you’re kicking
And you’re shouting at me
I’m relying on your common decency
So far it hasn’t surfaced
But I’m sure it exists
It just takes a while to travel
From your head to your fist
I can’t understand
What makes a man
Hate another man
Help me understand

To err is human….

Intelligence doesn’t man humans can’t make poor decisions of screw up, tis the nature of the beast. Admittedly I do not know anything about Canada history but I will read up now that you mention it.

stanleybmanly's avatar

I know a little about your history. For example I know that the fat cats in 13 colonies fled with all the loot they could carry at the outbreak of hostilities with England. They headed due North to the “loyal” part of North America.
