Should I be concerned about this fever?

Asked by wsxwh111 (2464points) July 7th, 2015

So today I felt sleepy and slept through whole morning and afternoon, after dinner I felt dizzy, tired and irritable and body temperature reached 38.6°, after an antipyretic pill and intravenous injection of some anticatarrhals I returned home and my body temperature remains the same.
So just curious, what would you guys do when you have a fever, and should I be concerned about this?
Thanks for your attention! :)

“Murkin here. I had to translate into Fahrenheit, which is 101.

Did you go to the ER? What did they say?

In plain English, what type of aspirin did you take? And why did they give you an injection for inflammation?

You should always be concerned when you experience unusual symptoms. Make an appointment with a doctor.

I went to ER and they said it was throat pharyngitis and gave me prescription of 2 days’ injection and some “paracetamol, aminophenazone, caffeine and chlorphenamine maleate tablet” (According to the instruction, I don’t even know if it’s the correct translation of the pills’ name. )

I think you should watch the fever and if it rises past 102 go back. Otherwise, I’d give it 24 hours for the meds they gave you to work.

Do what they told you and make sure you drink A LOT of water. Drink all the time and make sure you sleep even more. You will feel better by tomorrow.

What I would do is drink water and ginger ale. Chicken noodle soup and pepto bismal for nausea and get bed rest. Also put on relaxing music on auto repete.

101 wouldn’t cause me to go to the doctor unless I had additional symptoms that made me think I needed a doctor’s attention.

Sore throat with fever? Yes, I would get a strep culture. Cough, achy, and barely able to move out of bed? I’d take three ibuprofen with a glass of water, a few crackers, and go to bed. I’d do that every 6 hours along with some food here and there, soup, soda, for four days, and by then it usually let’s up a little (assuming it’s the flu). If the three ibuprofen don’t work alone I add a Tylenol and use cold wet compresses to cool my forehead, arms, , stomach, and thighs until the drugs luck in. It takes about 45–50 minutes for the drugs to bring down a fever.

When I have the flu or strep my fever usually reaches 103 if I do nothing, it can go higher.

However, you say you are dizzy and you took a decongestant? Is that right? Or, am I translating those drugs wrong? Congestion and fever along with dizziness is a bacterial sinus infection probably. That needs a doctor to prescribe antibiotics if it doesn’t get better within a few days. The flu, and strep for that matter, almost never has congestion.

If I suddenly felt much worse I’d go straight to the ER. A sudden downturn like trouble breathing, uncontrollable fever 104 and up, or just a general feeling something is extremely wrong should not be played with.

That’s what I do. I’m not a doctor, that’s not medical advice. It is impossible for me or anyone here to evaluate you.

Sounds like a virus. Stay in bed but stay cool. Rest. Take paracetamol. Drink lots of water or soothing drinks if you have a sore throat. I think in a week you will have recovered fully. If you do feel better, good. If you feel the same, keep resting. No need to see another doctor. If you feel significantly worse go and see the doctor again. After two weeks of no improvement go and see the doc again

@wsxwh111: Are you better now? I hope so. Please let us know.

JLeslie's avatar

@Stinley Why does it sound like a virus to you? It sounds like a bacterial infection to me, unless the OP is under the age of 15. Young people get fevers with almost everything.

wsxwh111's avatar

@ZEPHYRA I’m holding to a giant bottle of water right now LOL, thank you for your advice! :)

wsxwh111's avatar

@JLeslie Yeah i was dizzy and took a decongestant. I went to see the doctor yesterday night and the diagnose was pharyngitis.
Thank you :b, and great new image BTW

wsxwh111's avatar

@jca Thanks for caring :) so quick update: I went to the hospital yesterday night and got some pills and i.v. but after that the temperature remained 101.6 Fahrenheit till 4:00 a.m. when I fell asleep. 100 Fahrenheit this afternoon and 100.8 this evening, I got a second i.v. at 7:00 p.m. but now (10:00 p.m.) still 100.8.
I guess I’m getting better after all haha, but I didn’t realize fever can be such a pain in the A till last night. So uncomfortable

Were the pills antibiotics?

Stinley's avatar

@JLeslie it sounds like a bad cold to me (or maybe the flu but the fact that @wsxwh111 is able to get themselves out of bed suggests it’s not flu). Apart from the sore throat, there are no other symptoms of possible bacterial infection. It’s not recommended to use antibiotics for sore throats.

wsxwh111's avatar

@Dutchess_III No, but the i.v. was.

wsxwh111's avatar

@Stinley I don’t know, it’s not usual for people around me to stay in bed all day long just because flu& fever, and yesterday I got so dizzy to stay in bed for the whole day. Usually doctors here don’t prescribe antibiotics for i.v. for fever, too. But they also didn’t diagnose it as a flu.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Well, I’ve only had what I would consider “the flu” twice in my life, both times before I was 20. Yes, dizzy, sleepy, out of it, was a big part of it. Just stayed in bed until it all passed.

wsxwh111's avatar

@Dutchess_lll Now I get sore in the muscles.. Maybe lying in bed is a good idea. Hate it ><

Dutchess_III's avatar

Have you been vomiting?

JLeslie's avatar

@Stinley Congestion with fever is an indicator of bacterial infection. Colds don’t cause fevers in adults. I don’t know if the OP is actually congested, or the doctor took a guess at trying the drug because of the dizzy. If the mucous is green then I’d say for sure bacterial, but we don’t know if it is.

@wsxwh111 Is the mucous green? Do you have a cough?

Dutchess_III's avatar

@JLeslie Where do you get that colds don’t cause fevers in adults?

talljasperman's avatar

Feed a fever starve a cold.

JLeslie's avatar

@Dutchess_III Being 47 and having had many colds.

Also, google any website for cold symptoms or most commonly you can find comparisons of cold vs flu and it’s simply very rare for adults to get a fever with a cold. Not impossible, but highly improbable. Minor increases in temp maybe, but almost never over 100. Even a slight temp
Increase is rare.

Stinley's avatar

My link from the UK NHS (a trustworthy source) says that fever can happen in a cold. Also what many people call flu is not flu but some other virus. This is what I think the OP has.

Flu comes on very rapidly and you can’t get out of bed. If you’ve been poorly for a day or two but are able to get up, it’s not flu.

JLeslie's avatar

@Stinley If you are talking to me you didn’t read my first answer well. I wrote the flu is high fever, can’t move out of bed, usually with a cough, and almost never with congestion.

I also wrote if there is congestion and a fever it’s typically a bacterial infection.

A cold has congestion, almost never a fever in adults. It often starts with a sore throat for 48 hours, but not always.

Flu, colds, bacterial sinus infections, are three different things. I already know that, I described the symptoms already above.

I’m not saying the OP definitely has one of those three things, I still don’t feel like I know enough symptoms to even guess well.

Can the OP get out of bed? Did it start with a sore throat? Does she have a cough? Is her nose very runny?

Dutchess_III's avatar

@talljasperman It’s “Feed a cold, starve a fever.” For what it’s worth. I think the logic is that the act of digesting food takes energy and energy=heat.

wsxwh111's avatar

@stinley Well I once had H1N1 and stayed home playing computers all day long lol, I think I should be careful with this damn fever but it can’t keep the awesome me in bed XD

Dutchess_III's avatar

So how are you today?

wsxwh111's avatar

@Dutchess_III Still got the sore in muscles and throat, hate to eat things but the temperature is down to 100

Dutchess_III's avatar

It’s best if you just stay down for a while, even if you don’t want to. Your body will heal itself.

wsxwh111's avatar

Yeah maybe.. I’ll spend more cozy time in bed XD

Stinley's avatar

Glad to hear you are a little better. I think you are probably on the road to recovery. But keep an eye on your symptoms and keep resting, taking the pills and drinking plenty of water.

wsxwh111's avatar

@Stinley Totally, thank you!
