Can you help me find information that will debunk, or verify, the following claim on Facebook?
“White People documentary hosted by illegal immigrant features young Americans crying over their “white privilege”
It smacks of ridiculous satire to me, but I can’t find anything.
Here is the video.

MtV has been making shows like this forever. It’s probably for young adults. Alex jones is a conspiracy theorist and a conservative. (I think). Don’t get too excited about anything he says.
The burden of proof is on the claimant. The short clip shows people of different races crying. Also, there’s no context so we don’t actually know why they are crying.
I’m not “getting excited.” I just want to be able to refute the video. Someone is challenging me to. To me it’s so obvious. It’s hard to respect people who want to take this shite seriously.
Refute it how? It’s evidently a real show that’s on MTV. It’s for young adults.
A “real show” doesn’t make it “real.”
“I Dream of Jeanne” was a “real show.”
What are you trying to verify here?
- The existence of the documentary? It’s pretty well reported that it exists and will be released this month.
- The immigration status of Jose Antonio Vargas, the guy who directs the film? He doesn’t appear to be a citizen. Has been here since he was 12. Some people prefer “undocumented American” over “illegal immigrant”. He seems to prefer “undocumented American”. I do too – with emphasis on the “American” part.
I’m confused what you are asking here.
I see! I mean, it is a show that was actually made by MTV, not an “onion” type thing, (I think). And I don’t know how ” I dream of genie” could be more real than a show on MTV. ( I’m laughing).
Like @DoNotKnow, I don’t understand exactly what it is you wish to refute. Is it that white people are privileged or that this piece is a documentary rather than satire? Or what? What exactly is the “claim” made on Facebook?
I want to show that it is a gag. It’s just a BS program where they hired starving actors to say their lines and cry (I haven’t seen it, but that’s what I hear.) This isn’t anything that anyone really believes is true.

I’m not following you at all. Are you saying that these are all actors? I watched the preview, and it looked like a normal young-person documentary, perfect for MTV. I’ll also add that if done right, it’s an important one. Asking people to discuss what it means to be white – and in the process they have to face the reality of white privilege – can’t be a bad thing.
Well, I guess I’ll go watch it.
Well, that was just a trailer.
Good idea! You should see it first. As a concept, it sounds perfectly valid to me.
OK, I should have asked this another way, since it is taking this turn.
Do you think the program (which has yet to air) will really have something valid to say, or is it simply designed to poke at the Angry Entitled White Man, which the title, all by itself, has done. Here are the responses to the guy who posted this trailer:
From the OP: “what a bunch of PC lib bullshit”
Next comment, again from the OP: “never mind probably get in Trouble if i express true feelings about this pos illegal Host.”
Next comment, from the OP’s mother: “Garbage!!!!!”
She clarified in her next comment: “Not your statements- the “white shame” thing is garbage.
Then, from his daughter who is 26 or so, and who I have always respected for her level headedness and brains, posted “Dad…” followed by happy faces laughing so hard they are crying. (I gave her a “like” for it. His other daughter did too.)
Then a friend: “This is absolutely effing ridiculous. I’m so sick of the media and bullshit journalists race bating and trying to blame “white” people for every fricken thing. Ugh.”
@Dutchess_III: “Do you think the program (which has yet to air) will really have something valid to say”
Absolutely. I’m not saying that a shabby youth-oriented MTV documentary is going to pull this off necessarily. But the fact that people are getting their feelings hurt about this is proof enough that the conversation is not taking place. What conversation? What it means to be white. The privilege that comes from being born white. This is not one of those “pc” conversations about making everyone feel better. It’s about recognizing that I enjoy certain privileges. Some people get upset when we talk about climate change. Others get upset when we talk about race. But not talking about it doesn’t make it go away.
I understand that some white people may feel defensive when it comes to race. We all have our challenges in life, and it may seem that liberals are just trying to find someone to blame. But to me, that couldn’t be further from the truth. When we identify reality, and can talk about it with clarity and compassion, we can figure out how to fix it. Talking about anthropogenic climate change isn’t designed to just find someone to blame. It’s an attempt to determine the facts so we know how to fix it.
I agree that there are an awful lot of things that white people in America take for granted that become problematic for people of color.
