Do any of the conservative (fundamentalist) Christian religions have a position on womens' thong undergarments?

Asked by elbanditoroso (33552points) July 9th, 2015

Have the (religious denomination of your choice) every condemned (or even commented on) women and thong underwear?

Having walked behind a woman in a long dress tonight, who was clearly wearing same, it was abundantly clear that her gluteus maximus was not otherwise adorned. That sort of suggestiveness, it would seem to me would be something that the male dominated conservative religions would want to decry.

But I couldn’t find anything.

For those who follow these religions – has the subject of womens’ thongs ever arisen as something to be avoided?

It isn’t just Fundamentalist Christian groups which are fussy about women’s dress codes. Both Muslims and Orthodox Jews have similar attitudes.

There are numerous Bible passages regarding the subject of modesty which, not referencing thongs specifically, make it clear that any manner of dress which would be too revealing is forbidden. I’m surprised that you failed to find any mention of this. Just putting the word modesty into any decent Bible concordance would net a fair number of relevant passages. I’ll try to hunt up a few when I get some spare time.

Each group has their own interpretations of that but the basic idea is to not dress in a sexually suggestive manner.

It would seem to me that in the situation you describe that the problem is less the thong itself as it is the fact that the clothing covering it is so tight as to reveal its contours.

If a lady were wearing a loose pleated skirt obviously it wouldn’t make much difference whether it was a thong or regular underwear underneath since it wouldn’t be obvious.

Also of interest along these lines recently, I was reading an article about Yoga pants being the current item being regarded as too revealing.

And there are some Pentecostal churches which require members to wear either dresses or skirts. Pants or slacks of any type are absolutely verboten.

IMHO, a lot of this places too much of the responsibility upon a woman for the control of mens sexual impulses. A certain degree of modesty makes sense but most people have the good common sense to not dress for church in the same way they would for going to a club or a concert.

But treating women like children with the icky picky regulations employed by most conservative groups (whether Christian, Jewish, or Muslim) is pretty unfair and ridiculous. Just my two cents worth.

Why should any religion give a care what is concealed under a dress or trousers ? For that matter, I have heard no prohibitions anywhere against dispensing with underwear altogether.

I say keep religion out of government, school and my underwear.

From Exodus 28:42 English Standard version

“You shall make for them linen undergarments to cover their naked flesh. They shall reach from the hips to the thighs;”

I would say by this standard, the thong does not pass muster.

I would ignore it.

According to the Amish Ordnung (rules of comportment), undies must reach halfway to the knee, and elastic is forbidden. Kind of rules out thongs.

The whole point of a thong is that it is supposed to not be obvious on the outside. You’re not supposed to see any line or tightness, as opposed to other “granny panties” where you can see a line going across the bottom of the butt and “panty lines” along the top of the thighs. Clearly the thong worn by the lady in the OP’s post was not fitted properly.

@jca Maybe it was fitted the way she wanted, and she wanted to display it? I have had that happen to me.

elbanditoroso's avatar

@josie – I was admiring it, not ignoring it. @Adirondackwannabe may very well be correct. She may have been wearing it (and walking) for effect and sensation.

I guess I’m doing it wrong. I’ve never worn clothes tight enough to show any kind of panty line.

jca's avatar

@Dutchess_III: You are then doing it right.

I’ve seen ladies with tight undergarment lines and it’s not a good look.

I first heard the term “camel toes” from my son, and he just laughed and laughed because I had no idea what he was talking about. He wouldn’t tell me either. I think I asked the question here!

I believe that if there is indeed a Hell, everyone there will be forced to wear thong underwear and be stuck with eternal wedgies and picking the thongs out of their butt cracks.

jca's avatar

@keobooks: To me, a thong is way more comfortable than regular underwear. You don’t feel it at all. Trust me.

Dutchess_III's avatar

Ew. Cleaning poopies out of the strap.

keobooks's avatar

@jca I’ve heard people say that. But I get a strong urge to scratch my butt just looking at them. I don’t see how you can’t feel it. But you probably wear them and I am firmly on the side of “team granny pants”

The Mormons have special underwear. They even released a video about it. Here

You can skip the first 2 minutes. That part just shows examples of how other religions have special clothes. Other religions display their clothes on the outside. The Mormons have special clothes too but like a handgun in a CCW* state they are only visible to the owner and to God. But you can get a peek by watching the video. They look like Spanx Shapewear.
According to the video. calling them magic underwear is offensive.
Enjoy.

I just googled a pic of Mormon undergarments. Is it just me, or do the men’s pants look like they were made for someone hung like a Clydesdale? Omg! Mormons are legendary for their Osmond perfect teeth. Are they also blessed by God in this department as well?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Probably not. The men just think they are. They obsess on shite like that. Even in the Bible, where they shouldn’t even be talking about those things! Ezekiel 23:20: “There she lusted after her lovers, whose genitals were like those of donkeys and whose emission was like that of horses.” Obviously the writers didn’t know women very well.
It’s a guy thing.

@elbanditoroso

I meant ignore the passage.

Hypocrisy_Central's avatar

If it is not showing, such as above low hip-hugging jeans, I have never heard of a congregation having a problem with it, if they did, they might have to have one with deceptive ”add-inches-to-the-bust” bras.

@josie – Those instructions were for priests.
