Maybe you slept wrong. Or punched nerve.
Both legs or just one leg?
My concern would be a DVT. Was there any trauma to the area? Have you recently had surgery? Do you have a clotting disorder (or a family history of people with clotting disorders)? If you answered yes to any of these you should get checked out with a venous ultrasound. A DVT can break loose and move to your lung causing a pulmonary embolism. Those are often fatal, so if you have reason to suspect a DVT, you shouldn’t mess around and get it checked out ASAP. If you feel the pain ascending up your leg you need to get to the ER right away, and if you have chest pain or shortness of breath you need to call 911.
It could be other less serious things too of course, but I just wanted to make you aware that there could be a potentially serious issue.
I don’t have a medical degree, and neither does anyone here. Best bet, depending on the pain, go to the ER, if not that bad, make an appointment with your MD, and if he/she is busy, the first one you can….way better than a bunch of plumbers, computer programmers, HR personnel etc. trying to give you medical; advice.

There are too many possibilities. You need to describe the pain better to us and any other symptoms you have, and then still we are just on the internet and no substitute for a doctor’s evaluation.

Sharp pain, like a Charlie-horse?
As others have said, see a doctor.
Now that the disclaimer is out of the way -
front, about 2–3 inches above the knee?
Are these sharp pains just a second or two (or less) or are they sustained?
How frequent?
I’m with @talljasperman – lacking any further information from you, my guess is a pinched nerve. But you haven’t given us much to work with.
Could be a blood clot. See a doctor before it moves on to your brain, heart, or lungs. Don’t sit for long periods. Get up and move around.
Deep vein thrombosis from living a too sedentary lifestyle. I spelled pinched nerve wrong.
Hopping out of a golf cart onto one leg all day can do that.
There is a pill you take before surgery, a high powered antibiotic, that can give you bad thigh pain.
