Okay, I admit it—this is an odd question.
Seeing this photo of Mr. Clinton made me think how often I’ve seen him clinch up his mouth when (I presume) he was trying to look pensive—and that made me wonder what facial expressions I must repeatedly make to communicate how I’m feeling or at least wish to appear feeling.
Do you know someone who has a facial expression or bit of body language you’ve seen again and again and can describe it, or… if you were someone else looking at your face, what expression might they have often seen on it?

As a conversational tool to encourage someone to expand more on a comment they just made, I raise my eyebrows, open my eyes wider, my head moves slightly forward, and I say ‘Reeeally?’ The ‘really’ isn’t a skeptical ‘I’m not sure I believe you’ tone, but rather a ‘I’m pleasantly surprised at your comment, tell me more’ tone.
No matter how relaxed, mellow, and at peace I feel, my normal neutral expression appears stern to people who don’t know me well. It’s something I’m aware of and try to compensate for when I’m in public with eye contact and a smile.
I do a great deadpan expression, even though I might be laughing hysterically inside. It’s the best fun ever. Ha!
Ironic for me that this topic arose. My nickname is based on my “pet facial expressions”. I’m almost never grumpy.. but something about my expressions lead people to believe that I am. I don’t look like Walter Mathow did or anything… but there’s just some quirk of my face that makes people think I’m a super negative person. It happens to such a degree that I came up with this current nickname.
In my head I’m very optimistic and happy.. outwardly I think I appear guarded.. or “stern” like @bossob .
