What is this weird cough?

Asked by kimchi (1442points) July 15th, 2015

Warning: TMI! I came to South Korea about a week ago. Since then, I had very bad jet lag, and did not feel too well. Now, I have a cough. I started my period yesterday, with heavy blood, and my stomach has painful cramps which does not usually happen-my cramps rarely hurt. I am pretty weak and all in all don’t feel well. I have a bit of a fever. Any ideas on what this is? Is it just the side effect of traveling over a lot of time zones?

Sounds like it could be the flu, although flu usually has a very high fever and it’s so exhausting you usually feel like you can’t get out of bed.

Otherwise, it’s some sort of virus or bacterial infection. If it were me I’d keep my fever down with ibuprofen, take some Tussin DM cough medicine now and then, and see how it goes over the next few days. The flu usually let’s up a little after 4 days.

Other illnesses with cough, the cough often lasts up to three weeks. If you have some congestion that is yellow or green I would go to the doctor for antibiotics if you don’t improve in a few days.

If you suddenly get much worse, having trouble breathing, can’t keep your fever below 103, or feel something is very wrong go to the ER.

I’m not a doctor, that’s just what I would do.

That is not normal jet lag. You may want to see a doctor.

They have some serious yellow dust issues over there which your system isn’t used to. You probably got sick as a result.

What is weird about the cough? Is it dry or wet?

Could be MERS. Seriously, get checked.

MERS affects the respiratory system (lungs and breathing tubes). Most MERS patients developed severe acute respiratory illness with symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath. The incubation period is from 2 to 14 days.

You might have been exposed to something on the flight or while traveling. The period is just making it worse. Get to a doctor ASAP.

You body is not accustomed to the water. Drink bottled stuff. Make sure all of your food is well cooked.

@knitper The water? Did you mean to add a tilde? WTH?

@kimchi How are you feeling today?

kritiper's avatar

@JLeslie Take my word for it! Happens to me all too frequently. One can boil it to clear out any minor “bugs” but the chemical difference could set one off, too.

A cough and fever from the water? I’ve never heard of such a thing.

I don’t know much about the period part but I would suggest seeing a doctor, too.
