The Red Light District, for sure. At night. Bring money.
The art galleries and museums are great especially the Van Gogh one. Anne Franks house is sad but worth a visit.
Amsterdam is a walking city. Arm yourself with a little knowledge about the history and architecture of Amsterdam and get out there. There are excellent museums and galleries, a beautiful canal system, and a lively night life. To go a little further afield, or just to cover more ground in the city, rent a bike! I remember cycling through the paths of Vondelpark on a sunny day and stopping for a picnic. Enjoying marijuana is legal in Amsterdam, as is prostitution, two attractions that might be a little different and interesting to explore, if that’s your thing.
Take the free walking tour with Sandemann’s New Europe. Perfect blend of education and entertainment.
@Delaney I thought marijuana is only legal for the locals now?
Welcome to Fluther.
I highly recommend a guided canal boat tour. The tour operators are real pros at presenting the city, the canals are ubiquitous through the town, and you’ll sit in a comfortable seat and listen to an entertaining and humorous – and interesting – presentation of the city, giving you many more ideas of “what to do next”.
And say hello to the folks at Café Pacífico in the Red Light District for me (enjoy the lemon sorbet there, too).
Check out Anthony Bourdain’s visits there. He had two previous shows, No Reservations and The Layover.
Each one is available on YouTube. His viewpoint is ALWAYS interesting. Watch each episode. I guarantee you won’t be bored.
Thanks to all of you for great information.
