What does "groovy" mean?

Asked by cofeka (154points) July 22nd, 2015

In this YouTube video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4R52uM3wZEw), Jason Mraz referred to his song is kind of “groovy” at 1:00.
Does he mean that the song is attractive, fashionable, excellent or something else?

Groovy is a word from the ‘60’s meaning cool or excellent or fantastic.

Most excellent.

I subbed for a male teacher who was out on maternity leave. I started the class on a project to make him a big, giant congratulations sign for when he came back.
Turns out he likes hockey, so I said to do a hockey motif.
I also had them make it in big bubble letters like we used to do in the late 60’s, early 70’s. Then I had them fill the letters up with hockey stuff.
So, one of the kids, who was also into hockey, showed me his letter.
I said, “Groovy!”
He said, “What?”
I said, “Groovy….” then looking at his confounded face I said, “Don’t you know what ‘groovy’ is?”
“No,” he snorted. But I know Wayne Gretzky,” and turned and walked away as a point of dismissal.
Sigh

Simon and Garfunkle’s Feelin’ Groovy is a good illustration of the meaning of the word :Groovy”. It’s general use was limited to only a few years.

Uh uh! I used it last year, maybe even two times, @Pachy!

Nah, you guys. One of the best songs of all time, Groovy Kind of Love, Phil Collins.

It comes from a old gangster, hipster, bopper, beatnik saying that originally was “In the groove.”

“A Groovy Kind Of Love” was done first, and best, by the Mindbenders.
The song often referred to as “Feeling Groovy” is actually called “The 59th Ave. Bridge Song”.
Being groovy, or in the groove, or being a total groove, are different in their subtleties. Being groovy means it is very cool.

Groovy has been around since at least the 1930s. it originally meant the musical sound was good enough to record on a record. Recording started with a blank disk and the sound made grooves into a record.

Original link had no music. Here’s Jimmy Dorsey

Ooops, @Yetanotheruser. Not sure if I missed seeing your post or was in the middle of writing mine at the same time. Oh well… you beat me to it.
