If you are asked for your references after the first interview is that a positive or negative thing ?
Does this mean anything at all or is just some companies procedure

Don’t want to burst your bubble, but it’s probably just procedure. That said, it’s certainly not a negative. They probably wouldn’t have asked for it unless you were in the running. Good luck!

It probably means that you passed the first hurdle.
If they didn’t think you were promising (after an interview) they wouldn’t bother with references.
It’s a good sign. Don’t overthink it. Brief your references ahead of time that they might get a call. Make sure they don’t say anything that could hurt your chances.. make sure they have a good story about how badass you are. Often, the references can make or break the job between candidates.
Positive in that your potential is being moved on to the next phase of the process.
