In the world of fanfiction. What does OC mean?

it was a harry potter fanfic.

I Googled and found this. As far as I can tell, it means “Original Character.” On another site it said it meant ”Other Character” like if you were talking about the dynamics between two characters you’d say something like Harry/OC (Harry/Ron) But honestly, I don’t know. This is just a guess.. and probably a bad one.
I know this isn’t the proper meaning, but whenever my sister-in-law and I send risque emails back and forth we always use “OC” in the subject line denoting “open carefully”.
Original character. Absolutely. 100%
It means that its a character that the author made up and put in to the story that was not in the book that the fanfic is based off of.
It means you should probably avoid the fanfic. Heh. Original characters tend to be poorly-written self-inserts by the author.
in case you were wondering…“OOC” = out of character. for example, Hermione not remembering an important spell would be OOC for her.
OOC is mostly used, however, in RPG’s when a person is saying something as themselves and not as their character.
