When you formally "separate" from your spouse, is your marriage legally over, or is there some sort of 'holding pattern'?

They said on the radio today that Al and Tipper Gore divorced in 2010.

News to me, so I Googled it. Both Al and Tipper’s bios on Wiki shows the marriage ending in 2010, but there was no divorce.
