Ideally, the phone is configured to upload photos automatically to Google Photos. If configured the way it’s supposed to be, you should be able to throw away an Android phone without fear that you’ve lost any data. It’s an interface to the cloud.
So, what your friend will want to do is go to https://photos.google.com/ or open the Photos app on her/his phone and make sure the photo is there. Note: It’s possible that this friend has yet to migrate to Google Photos. If this is the case, s/he may need to go into Google+ photos to access the photo.
There are downloadable programs for your computer that may recover deleted photos. Just hook up your phone to your computer and see if it will recover any deleted pics. But that’s no garauntee.
There’s a free app called SMS Backup that will save any texts, call logs, and mms to your gmail account. Not sure about other email accounts. I use it and it’s great. You can have peace of mind if you accidentally delete something it will still be in your email.
There’s also a free app called Dumpster that will save deleted pics. I just tried it and it works.

Thanks, you two! I passed the advice along, then forgot all about it.
