Which are your favorite historical eras? Why do you find your favorite eras interesting?

Asked by Espiritus_Corvus (17294points) August 30th, 2015

Would it be that you feel you would thrive better in that time? Is it the events that interest you? The people? The technology and fashion?

The Voyager space launches. In the 70’s. I was full of wonder.

Lewis and Clarke, exploring a vast untamed frontier would have been quite an adventure.

When I was young I had such a yearning for the Roaring Twenties that it gave me a strong interest in reincarnation. Having been born in the early 1960’s, the time frame was right. I also had a keen interest in the Egyptian era. A good hypnotist probably could have talked me right into a string of past lives.

Right now I’m finally catching up with the American Civil War Era. It’s amazing how little was taught about an era that still defines America, 150 years later. Consider that the country was less than 100 years old when the war broke out. I’m beginning to think that The Civil War should be a stand-alone required course in American high schools, with a defined curriculum. Southern schools, at least in my eqperience, seem to just gloss over it.

I would love to be able to live in the later 1800’s mainly because of the fashion. Most of the era’s I want to have lived in are driven by the fashion, such as late 1940 and the 50’s (as a teenager of course!)

The period between 1920 and 1950, America. I like the time for many reasons. First of all the Roaring Twenty (Mafia anyone?). Then the mindset. I find that much of my mindset is similar to the way people back then thought. I like the fashion too, especially the trench coat and the fedora hat.

WW2 era. Certainly not due to the war. Mostly due to the Big Bands and the dancing. Also I loved the fashion/hair of the day. Regarding the war though….it would have been nice to live in a time where America for the most part banded together.

@anniereborn beat me to the punch. I’ve always been fascinated by the ‘40s—the music, the clothes and cars, FDR, and of course the movies.

It’s hard for me to choose just one era. I’m fascinated by the most ancient cultures, such as the Sumerians in the time of Gilgamesh, and the the Hittite and Babylonian empires. Rome in the time from the Third Servile War through to Octavian’s rise to power is also an exciting chapter of history. Rome under Marcus Aurelius is another. The Viking era is undeniably cool.

If I had to choose just one to live in though, it would be in Greece between 435 and 320 BC. The combination of the Peloponnesian War, and the active teaching periods of Plato and Aristotle make this possibly the most exciting period in all of history to be alive.

Oh, how we pine for these historical ears!

Anywhere from the 20’s to the 60’s would be my choice. Of course, that is based solely on the skewed theatrical representation of those eras.. not by the lack of proper household plumbing. I think if I were to time travel right now it would have to be with the condition that I have no knowledge of the future.

There’s just something .. great.. about people having to go see a musician because that was the only way to hear him. Go read a book because there was no such thing as an e-book. Go investigate something because there is no internet with which to shorten the process.

Those eras just feel slower paced and wholesome in comparison to our digital age. Like I said.. it’s a skewed perspective.. but it still is one.
