Who are your bug friends?

Asked by jaytkay (25810points) September 7th, 2015

I found some beautiful spiders in my garden this weekend. Here’s one on my jalapeno plant.

It got me thinking.

Indoors, I am tolerant of spiders and spider webs because I think they are eating less welcome bugs.

Outside, I feel lucky when a praying mantis visits. I love the bees for their hard work spreading pollen.

Also, I’ve been enjoying the LOUD cicadas. They really let you know IT’S SUMMER!!!

Do you have some bug allies?

I like lady bugs in the garden, and fireflies are magical on warm summer nights.

Gee @josie you and I agree on something!
And to answer the question, while I do agree some bugs serve a purpose, I have none as allies,or friends.

Well, I keep this one as a pet.

Friends is a stretch. I’m pretty much indifferent to anything outside barring mosquitoes and flies. Inside, I will tolerate the spiders patrolling the house in the wee hours. If a honeybee or bumblebee bungles into the house, they might get captured for eviction. Their close cousins the ants are however in for a gruesome death by poisoning.

I’m always wondering what those big spiders find to eat inside my house.

This guy is always welcomed to come in, because he’s mostly harmless, and because there’s a suspertition run in my family that whenever he comes he’ll bring fortune sooner or later. Watching him clicking his chest is a delight itself.

I love insects and my favorites are preying mantises, jumping spiders, crane flies, lacewings and moths and butterflies. We just had an amazing Sphinx moth on the porch the other night, Jumping spiders are especially adorable with their crazy little eyes and the way they pounce and bounce around.

I love this video!

Here’s a preying mantis vs bee encounter.

In reality, they ignored each other. I was hoping for a Godzilla and Mothra kind of fight.

I used to have a cup marked L.B. in my old office just to let them outside when they came into the house.

Spiders are not insects.

Wouldn’t say any of them are my allies, but I like butterflies. Although most bugs that get in here are usually destroyed by my cats.

I’m always happy to see a big mosquito hawk in the house and let it alone. They eat their weight in mosquitos thrice daily. Daddy Long Legs and other harmless spiders are always welcome to eat insect pests and control the insect population in general. These allies are extremely helpful in the tropical environment.

In the garden, these guys are always welcome.

I’m not clicking on that link.
I always liked ants. Always cleaning up and rarely sleeping. Such hard workers.

Honeybees are my friends, and I make them a bee-pond every Spring.

Praying mantises, walking sticks, spiders that hop, etc. are bug buddies. I’d let them live indoors, year-round.

@Adirondackwannabe That cup of yours has my initials on it. lol

@dxs It’s just a list of ten benificial bugs in the garden that I’ve were helpful, but I didn’t know their names. Just Lacewings and Damselbugs. Nothing gross. It is good that one can identify them and leave them alone. Sadly, in one’s desire to eliminate the bloody aphid from the gardens, they use pesticides and in doing so, they kill the allies along with the pests.

This is hilarious, a must see!

I am still struck with awe every time that I step outside and get to see how some small spider was able to construct a large symmetric beautifully engineered web.
