I want to start a petition to Playstation/Sony entertainment?

Asked by Mr_Grimm (412points) September 9th, 2015

So, I’m not sure if any of you guys are familiar with Playstation Home, which Sony released for the ps3. A couple months ago they removed it completely, and as far as i know have completely cut it off from development. Here is what I am trying to do. I would like to find out if they are going to be further developing it for the playstation 4. If they aren’t id like to start a petition to get them to do so. Playstation home provided me with hours of entertainment, hours of chatter with people all over the world. It had so many games, so much fun, it blows me away that they would halt development. Help me out guys please!

Do you really think that a company the size of Sony is going to respond to a grass-roots petition? I don’t.

Think of the economics – they would need to reassign a number of software and hardware people, rebuild marketing, contract out manufacturing, etc., as if it were a new product. How many PS Homes do you think they will sell?

The economics aren’t there – otherwise they would not have discontinued it in the first place.

pretty sure playstation home never left beta, simply due to the lackluster popularity. I hope they aren’t trying to introduce that to ps4, it would tarnish the brand image of the ps4.

If you like that type of gameplay/interaction, I’d suggest second life. It’s much more in depth than playstation home ever was.

Playstation home wasnt about selling homes haha.. they made quite a bit of money selling the games in home, selling betas for software they were going to release. It was kind of like interactive advertising. It showed e3 clips from the latest e3 shows, you got to play mini games with people all over the world. I saw somewhere that maybe possibly it will be coming out for ps4. Fact of the matter is it got sony revenue in a way most companys lack

I looked up second life, the graphics, interaction, and personalization dont even come close.

It didn’t generate that much revenue for Sony. If it had it would still be running.

At present, there are no plans to develop Playstation Home for the PS4. Starting a petition is unlikely to get you the results you want, but is probably the only option available to you. If you can demonstrate to Sony that its consumer base wants the feature, that could make it worthwhile for them to put the idea back into development. So find a petition site that isn’t oriented towards activism and start collecting those signatures!

I’ve used both Playstation Home and Second Life in the past. And while graphically Home might be superior (though it had the benefit of running on a dedicated gaming platform) the personalization in Second Life is so many light years ahead of Home it’s not even in the same galaxy. I don’t believe anyone who took an honest, objective look at both would seriously claim that Home offered more in the way of personalization.

Second Life gives one the tools to custom create everything from your avatar, to your clothes to your “home” and even the virtual land that you “own”. In Home you could dress your avatar up in a limited number of items that you had to purchase. You could move your avatar into a limited number of properties with next to no customization that you had to purchase. And you could play around in a limited number of spaces all designed to advertise various games and entertainment properties. You had no real creativity and everything you could see and experience was determined by what Sony and it’s developers wanted to sell you.

Home could have been something, but ultimately amounted to nothing more than advertisement. I believe that is why it failed. Sony chose to steer it down the path of constant marketing and commodification rather than making it a space for real creativity.
