The Saudis air strikes on Yemen are so brutal as to be considered by some as war crimes, will the US say anything or intervene as in Yugoslavia or just keep shipping the Saudi missiles and bombs to allow them to keep doing possible war crimes?

Asked by Hypocrisy_Central (26879points) September 13th, 2015

Yemen was supposedly an ally of the US, but I guess not as well as the Saudis (whom most of the 9/11 attackers came from), because Uncle Sam seems content to continue to ship them munitions so they can strike civilian targets ratchetting up the civilian death toll. Are the Saudis more strategic to the US now than Yemen? Is the US concern that they will make enemies of Yemen by not rebuking the Saudis but arming them so they can continue to inflict terror on Yemen? Because the US is backing the Saudis are other nations afraid to come to Yemen’s aid and defense?

“war crime” is a term that is hardly defined by anyone. It’s one of those words that is thrown out for publicity and headlines.

Right or wrong is sort of irrelevant in international relations. The US is Saudi Arabia’s ally, which means we won’t say anything. The Houthis are Iranian-supported, so there’s that angle as well; we don’t love Iran, in case you haven’t noticed. Interestingly, Israel and Saudi Arabia are best buddies in this Yemen conflict, too, which is pretty odd too. But it just goes to prove that politics and regional interests are far more important than right and wrong.

Finally, and more to the point – Yemen as a country fell apart 3 years ago. There wasn’t much of a Yemeni government before that, but it got a whole lot worse after the Arab Spring.

There is no Yemeni government to come to the aid of. All there is—two tribes.

No other country really cares about what happens to Yemen.

Unless the people of Yemen are supporting and harboring the Houthis bombing them just because the Houthis is there is as about as smart as it was during the Vietnam to shoot up everyone in the village because the VC controlled it or utilized it. It tends to turn people against you and make more enemies.

But it just goes to prove that politics and regional interests are far more important than right and wrong.
Which then goes back to one of the original points, when we needed Yemen to war against Iraq, they were darlings, but now that Saddam is gone, and Iraq is a non-factor, Uncle Sam has no need of Yemen as much as they need Saudi oil, so whatever the Saudis do to Yemen cloaking under ”we are de facto hitting Iran for you” they can bomb anyone, anytime, and almost anywhere and no one will say jack, not the US, not Germany, certainly not the UK, because the Saudis are the darling of the US.

Hello. Welcome to world politics. If you wish to discuss right and wrong and speaking up- go further back to Darfur. Humanity? Seriously?
Everyone is ‘in bed’ with everyone else. Allies do not even trust one another. And some countries with big yaps are receiving incredible US aid$, but still criticize.
Everything you hear the US is doing, pales in comparison to what is really happening- the stuff we never hear about.
Some reports I wouldn’t want to hear, personally.
No one is anyone’s ally.
Did you happen to hear about the last time the US bombed in Yeman?
The US airmen flew Russian jets…
The same Russians bullying everyone in the Eastern Ukraine at the same time…. yep.
Surprise!!!!!
Keep the lights out.
Everyone sleeps with their enemies apparently.
No conscience from anyone, anywhere.
Don’t try logic nor emotions with all of this.
That’s why it scares the living daylights out of me for these next Presidential elections. The first big international ‘situation’ hits- most of the candidate’s heads would explode and their bodies would fart and fly out the window.
God help us all…Yow!

You think the only western territory currently operating a concentration camp cares about war crimes?

More deaths in Palestine at the hands of Israel. More deaths in Syria at the hands of IS. According to your world view, the World is run by the devil anyway. Perhaps we should find him and put him on trial.

So what else is new? The historical fact is that the US (and for that matter, Russia, Soviet Union before that, France, England, Germany, and just about any ‘great power’ has always preferred to outsource its warmaking whenever possible. It keeps the option of plausible deniability.

This is the way foreign policy has been conducted for 800 years. Why the outrage today?

Morality – right and wrong, good and evil – has no place in politics, even less so in international politics. Duplicity is the game.

The Saudis have one commodity on which the west is hooked oil.

All of the oil from the US gets sold to the Far East.
As in: Texas oil, gets sent to the Far East. Not for the USA.
Surprise!

Oil, that is!
Black gold.
Texas Tea…..”

They may have oil, but let them back someone who is against Israel and see if Uncle Sam don’t hand them their coat and hat and show them the door. If the monarchy there ever lost their grip as in other nations (the US was all for “Arab Spring” so long as it did not affect any of his choice lackeys) Saudi Arabia might find them in the crosshairs of some invasion based on trumped up charges (have to keep the oil secure you know).

Shit, the Saudi royals are the world’s biggest backers of Islamic extremism. Have been for 100 years or so. It’s the world’s worst kept secret. Everyone knows it, but no one gives a shit.

The US needs Saudi’s oil, that’s why. It is called strategic partnership.

flutherother's avatar

We are very sensitive to acts of terrorism and yet so blasé about war crimes which are much the same thing only on a larger scale. Here is a recent BBC report from the Yemen

@flutherother: Your statement is very true. Sad, but very true.

Going so far that a supposed presidential candidate can publically advocate the brazen assassination of foreign leaders, while the equally unhinged crowd cheers.
