Why do people hang dangly stuff on their rear-view mirrors?

Asked by Kraigmo (9223points) September 15th, 2015

A large number of drivers hang dangly things on their rearview mirrors. I see the air freshener, the old fuzzy dice, and most often… necklaces.

What kind of joy does that give drivers that it’s worth distracting their view?

Because they don’t have the same sense “God” gave to creek rock! It’s a CAR, people! Not your freakin’ house!

My father used to have a Topo Gigio hanging from his rear view mirror when I was a child. Then one day, in the middle of the street, he slammed on the brakes and sent the car into a high-speed swerve, seemingly for no reason, nearly killing our whole family.

Turns out, he’d turned his head, seen the Topo Gigio out of the corner of his eye, and thought it was a pedestrian stepping in front of the car. He ripped the Topo Gigio down and never hung anything from the rear view mirror again.

It was a “neat” thing to do when I was a teenager. Now that I’m an old codger I think mirror danglies, bumper stickers and other such adornments just look tacky.

Think Ju-Ju or Reliquaries or fetishes or memories.

For the same reason people put dogs with bobbing heads in the back window of their car. They think they look cute and pretty etc. Personally, I think the glass bead type hanging shit is dangerous. They can sometimes act like mirrors and at certain times of the day, can be distracting to the driver of that car or other cars.
