Do I have to withdraw incomplete college applications if I've just changed my mind?

Asked by nettodo (473points) September 17th, 2015

I’m currently deep into the college application process sheds tears and I’ve got most of my top choices’ applications done or almost done. However, there were a couple of schools where I started the application, but decided to change my mind and not apply there. Should I call/email the admissions office of those schools and tell them to withdraw my application or should I let it sit incomplete and (possibly) expire?

It’s not absolutely necessary but it would be a considerate thing to do.

Wait a bit and then decide?

If you haven’t submitted the applications to the schools about which you’ve changed your mind, then I don’t think you need to tell them you won’t be submitting them.

My guess is that the admissions offices will only be considering applications that they receive. It could be that if every student who received an application but then decided not to apply called or emailed them, it would just add to their workload.

However, if you sent an application, then it would be considerate to let them know you changed your mind, so they wouldn’t have to waste their time processing it.
