DR. BEN CARSON:
Well, I guess it depends on what that faith is. If it’s inconsistent with the values and principles of America, then of course it should matter. But if it fits within the realm of America and consistent with the constitution, no problem.
CHUCK TODD:
So do you believe that Islam is consistent with the constitution?
DR. BEN CARSON:
No, I don’t, I do not.
CHUCK TODD:
So you—
DR. BEN CARSON:
I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation. I absolutely would not agree with that.”
So, if that is not racist what would be racist according to Trump and Carson, who say what they are saying is just “not politically correct”

Islam is not a race. Thus racism does not apply.
Being Mexican is no more a race than being American is a race . The Mexicans in question are the ones who enter the US without a visa or passport. They may be ancestors of indigenous peoples, or they may be ancestors of the Spanish-or both. Since they are generally poor, they may well be indios mexicanos, but that is not the context.
Racism is rendering a negative moral judgement against a person simply because of their racial phenotype. This is not justified, since choosing one’s race does not involve choice. If he had said the same thing and substituted the word “Arab”, you might have a point. If he had said that the only bad Mexican is a brown Mexican, you might also have a point.
It may or may not be justified to be suspicious of Islam and it’s relationship to modern Western liberal democracies.
But in our time, such suspicions are regarded as politically incorrect.
Make the question wider – it’s too narrow.
Does a racist ever admit that they are racist? The answer to that is clearly no. And this isn’t limited to race – it can be religiously motivated, wealth-motivated, education- motivated—- anything that can divide people.
The offensive person never admits that he/she is offensive, because that would be admitting that their persona is flawed, and that just doesn’t happen.
Kennedy was criticized for being Catholic, Bush was criticized for being evangelical, and Romney was criticized for being Mormon. I would be surprised if a Muslim was not criticized for being Muslim. Especially given the connection to Sharia Law and the discrimination found under it. Seems to be a legitimate area of concern for a presidential candidate.
What about an agnostic or, god forbid, an atheist? Would they also be a concern as a presidential candidate?
Racism is in the eye and mind of the beholder. What is racism to you may not be racism to me.
Trump would consider anything that denigrates the Great White Male or the Free Market System as racist.
Carson would consider anything that mentions blacks as racist but mexicans are free game. or anything that could be construed as a challenge to the Christian religion (which is pretty near everything else) as racist.
In the context of the question, another term is required since “racism” doesn’t apply.
@rojo – How about a Scientologist?
Do they exist? I thought they were mythological boogie men, along the lines of bigfoot and the moth man.
They must exist, I saw one on Oprah.
He would probably consider it racist if his own argument were to be applied to christianity.
Discriminatory? instead of the word racist.
Anyway is Carson bringing up Sharia to explain his statement that like bringing up Voodoo in relation to black people?
