Can anyone from California describe Congressmen Kevin McCarthy?

Asked by Pandora (32398points) September 25th, 2015

I just read that it is a possibility that he will take over for Boehner as Speaker of the House. Is he a back woods kind of Republican like Cruz or is he more intellectually forward, or is he just a card carrying Republican that leads from behind?
Is he the kind of strong leader they need to help reign in the crazies or is he one of the tea bagger crazies?

He’s a Republican so you won’t like him. As for leading from behind that’s the signature policy of Obama and the Democrats. As for the Tea Baggers, that’s something you may find in the Gay community so I assume you’re just Gay bashing. Otherwise I’ll leave you to your own devices on this.

He like Boehner is a veteran from the days when the Congress more or less worked through consensus. Some describe him as more staunchly conservative, but I think they’re in for disappointment. The primary reason for all the buzzing about his shot at the Speaker’s seat is due to the fact that he is the Majority leader, and the majority leader usually succeeds to speaker if the position is vacated.

He is a Tea Bagger, ultra conservative. A little to the right of @Jaxk so he will make Boehner look like a diplomatic consensus builder.

Yes he’s a tea party devotee, but he’s in a state that suffers fools poorly. He gets away with that nonsense because he represents such intellectual strongholds as Bakersfield and Tehachapi, but the state’s Republican party is suffering the same disruption broiling at the Federal level. The minute he begins spouting that teaparty nonsense, the hooked up big money Republican interests here will cut him off at the knees.

He’s a Congressman not a Senator He is also to far left to be a tea partier he is so far left he will make Boehner look like a Tea Partier. He will be the best thing to happen in Congress for the Democrats.

@Cruiser, thanks, I had a brain fart on this question. I forgot for a moment Speaker of the House is speaker of the HOUSE. LOL Duh. I wanted to correct it but it hadn’t been sent back to me to correct.

@Jaxk You don’t know that. I actually am alright with conservatives, but I’m not ok with conservatives who are closed to any progressive ideas. Some have said they wish things go back to the good ole days. I have no interest in going back to the early 1900’s. And when it comes to government shut down, I find it is a sad statement when a majority can disagree with one party member and yet follow down the yellow brick road. That is what I mean by lead from behind. People who are too afraid to not follow the party even if they know it’s something that won’t benefit anyone. They may not be bad, but they certainly are not any good at their job either if they are letting corporations or single interest groups pull their strings to the point that they forget they are in the business of making our government work for most of its’ citizens. Not just a handful.

@zenvelo Hmm. I hope your are wrong and @Cruiser is right.

Seriously people! Am I actually going to do my own research here? One person says he is ultra conservative, another that he is an old school middle of the roader and finally someone who claims he is a closet democrat. Guys, get your shit together and come to a consensus. I don’t what to have to look up whether to despise him or not!

Pandora's avatar

@rojo That’s why I asked as well. I didn’t want to read his whole resume. I assumed that there would be a consensus or close to one. I assumed wrong.

The way we can tell is how the Tea baggers react to him. If they pitch a bitch then we will know @zenvelo is mistaken. They have already said they will not accept an establishment Republican in that position again.

I lived in his district. He is not quite a tea partier but he has always been a home town golden boy. He goes to Valley Baptist Church and was basically coronated into his job with zero opposition. He never has had to fight for any elected position. Always handed to him. Very right wing politically and has no local pressure to be moderate. Major contributors are the Grimms of Grimway Farms (think baby carrots, they invented them) and Bolthouse Farms. Another former family farm turned corporate giant.

@rojo I was wrong, although I based it on his attempts at currying favor with the Tea Party wing. He is more what might be considered the neocon, those who think Goldwater was a bit pink, but not quite as Ku Klux Klan right wing as some of the Tea Party favorites.

My error was in comparing McCarthy along the lines of Bush/Cheney Republicans, rather than the current heart of the party.
