My position is in the lower 40s. I think this is near the back of the plane. What has been your experience when getting a seat on Southwest?

I was in B and in the 50s or 60s. Definitely a middle seat toward the back of the plane.
Southwest doesn’t assign seats. You might get lucky, but most likely you will wind up with a center or window seat. I fly Allegiant sometimes and they don’t let you influence your seat choice unless you pay extra. Then, by the time you check in you are given your seat number. Couples are almost never able to sit together. I much much prefer Southwest’s system.
What @JLeslie said. B40 is your boarding number, not your seat number. They’ll probably call something like A1-A30 first, then A31–60, and then B1-B30 and so on. The people with A1-A30 get in line first at the terminal to board the plane. When you get on the plane, you get to pick whatever seats are available (the ones that passengers A1-B39 didn’t take). On the planes I’ve been on, Southwest didn’t even have first class seating, though I’m pretty sure they have priority boarding.
Oh, when it comes to the boarding number, B40 is pretty good. Usually the numbers range from A1 to D60. And not all numbers are always assigned, so even small planes have boarding numbers in the Cs and Ds.
@dxs Explained it very well.
