We know that she loves poetry and I have just been thinking of one of mine and will post it below.

How about adding one of your favorites and we can present it as a garland for gailcalled?

Happiness

So early it’s still almost dark out.
I’m near the window with coffee,
and the usual early morning stuff
that passes for thought.
When I see the boy and his friend
walking up the road
to deliver the newspaper.
They wear caps and sweaters,
and one boy has a bag over his shoulder.
They are so happy
they aren’t saying anything, these boys.
I think if they could, they would take
each other’s arm.
It’s early in the morning,
and they are doing this thing together.
They come on, slowly.
The sky is taking on light,
though the moon still hangs pale over the water.
Such beauty that for a minute
death and ambition, even love,
doesn’t enter into this.
Happiness. It comes on
unexpectedly. And goes beyond, really,
any early morning talk about it.

Poem In October – by Dylan Thomas

It was my thirtieth year to heaven
Woke to my hearing from harbour and neighbour wood
And the mussel pooled and the heron
Priested shore
The morning beckon
With water praying and call of seagull and rook
And the knock of sailing boats on the net webbed wall
Myself to set foot
That second
In the still sleeping town and set forth.

My birthday began with the water-

We Are Made One with What We Touch and See

We are resolved into the supreme air,
We are made one with what we touch and see,

I went just went through 182 pages of messages trying to find the best of the poems she sent me. On the way, I was reminded of all the conversations about birds, flowers, trees, wildlife, music, modern culture, eclipses and meteor showers, our mutual family tragedies, her blasted knee and counting the telephone poles along the road that marked her therapeutic walks… sharing with me her remarkable take on life in general. I couldn’t find the poem I wanted. I kept it, but it’s buried in the hard drive of another computer. It was by a modern, female poet and it was poignant, but I can’t remember what it was about.

But I found this one by W. H. Auden. She said a fellow Flutherite and her had a good cry over it. I know the context in which they read it and I cried as well. This was during an exchange of dialogue we had about a house in Brooklyn that was occupied for a short time in 1941 by Auden, Carson McCullers, Benjamin Britten, Klaus Mann, Jane and Paul Bowles, Richard Wright, Salvadore Dali (on infrequent weekends) and Gypsy Rose Lee. It was called February House because so many of the occupants were born in February.

Among many, many other things, Gail is an expert on the various artistic communities that have popped up over the past couple hundred years and we share an interest in these anomalous concentrations of creativity. Here is Auden’s poem:

In Memoriam, L.K.A; 1950–1952

At peace under this mandarin, sleep, Lucina
Blue-eyed queen of white cats
For you the Ischian wave
Shall weep

When we who now miss you
Are American dust
And steep Epomeo in peace and war
Augustly a grave-watch keep.

Of course, I had to ask her what an Epomeo was. She explained that the poem was referring to Mt. Epomeo, the highest peak on the island of Ischia in the bay of Naples. No snark, no sarcasm, no comment on the failings of my education. So non-internet. And so shockingly knowledgeable and intelligent and beautiful.

I’m sure the poem was by Mary Oliver and probably “The Summer’s Day” – It’s one of Gail’s very favorites. I’ll find it and post it.

The Chambered Nautilus by Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr.

The Summer Day

Who made the world?
Who made the swan, and the black bear?
Who made the grasshopper?
This grasshopper, I mean—
the one who has flung herself out of the grass,
the one who is eating sugar out of my hand,
who is moving her jaws back and forth instead of up and down—
who is gazing around with her enormous and complicated eyes.
Now she lifts her pale forearms and thoroughly washes her face.

I don’t know exactly what a prayer is.
I do know how to pay attention, how to fall down
into the grass, how to kneel down in the grass,

A Poem on the Underground Wall Paul Simon

The last train is nearly due
The underground is closing soon
In the dark deserted station
Restless in anticipation
A man waits in the shadows

His restless eyes leap and scratch
At all that they can touch or catch
And hidden deep within his pocket

He holds a colored crayon

Having grown up in England but now living in Australia, I often think of Robert Browning’s words in Home thoughts from Abroad. I miss seeing the changing seasons. And while I love Australian birds and flowers, they are loud and brash. Knowing how much Gail loves her garden and nature, I feel she will connect with Browning’s words too.

OH, to be in England
Now that April’s there,
And whoever wakes in England
Sees, some morning, unaware,
That the lowest boughs and the brushwood sheaf
Round the elm-tree bole are in tiny leaf,
While the chaffinch sings on the orchard bough
In England—now!
And after April, when May follows,

We were talking about our childhood. She told me about visiting her grandfather’s house in Florida and I told her about hiking the Sierra foothills and riding hogs on a farm near Sacramento. She sent me this:

So was I once myself a swinger of birches.
And so I dream of going back to be.
It’s when I’m weary of considerations,
And life is too much like a pathless wood
Where your face burns and tickles with the cobwebs
Broken across it, and one eye is weeping
From a twig’s having lashed across it open.
I’d like to get away from earth awhile
And then come back to it and begin over.
May no fate willfully misunderstand me
And half grant what I wish and snatch me away
Not to return. Earth’s the right place for love:
I don’t know where it’s likely to go better.
I’d like to go by climbing a birch tree,
And climb black branches up a snow-white trunk

Humanity I Love You

Humanity i love you
because you would rather black the boots of
success than enquire whose soul dangles from his
watch-chain which would be embarrassing for both

parties and because you
unflinchingly applaud all
songs containing the words country home and
mother when sung at the old howard

Humanity i love you because
when you’re hard up you pawn your
intelligence to buy a drink and when
you’re flush pride keeps

you from the pawn shop and
because you are continually committing
nuisances but more
especially in your own house

Humanity i love you because you
are perpetually putting the secret of
life in your pants and forgetting
it’s there and sitting down

on it
and because you are
forever making poems in the lap
of death Humanity
