I’m watching, can’t say it’s going to be earth shaking or anything though.
Wow. Chafee looks like Odo from Deep Space 9
Graphics, theme song, singing. The only thing more embarrassing would be if each candidate were forced to sit in a pool of their own feces. Ridiculous.
Cheryl Crow kinda sounded like a crow…
Fortunately(?) my streaming service was glitching for a few minutes so I missed any theme song nonsense.
Seems like Jim Webbs microphone is not on par with the others….sounded like an announcer on a theme park tram ride. “Wo wah woh”.
Headin home to watch. SIGN ME UP!
I love Bernie. He sounds like my pissed-off uncle.
Bernie. That’s it. We’re done here.
Clinton
“I’m Hillary Clinton” ...no shit.
Ok, time to see of the battlefront beta servers are back up
Sanders is Captain Clueless as his hit home points was to spend more on education and create more jobs. Really? We already spend almost double per student on education than any other country and..create jobs? How? What are your real solutions to creating better paying jobs and not just simply raising minimum wage?
It’s a goddamn shame Anderson Cooper is gay. Those genes need to be passed on.
“I’m a progressive that likes to get things done”—you mean you cave.
Bernie: “You can have all the growth you can get, but it doesn’t mean anything if the profit only goes to the top 1%”
Thinking of changing the channel.
I’m going to give it Five minutes.
Hilary thinks Bernie is too weak on guns. Interesting.
there is no “gun show loophole”
Private person-to-person sales, I think, is what he’s talking about. Gun show booth owners sometimes do a “hush hush behind the counter” private sale. It’s a really hard thing to prove, and thus hard to prosecute.
They’re piling on Bernie’s gun position
Somebody Duct tape Bernies arms down before they fly off and hurt someone. O’Malley is rock solid so far.
Everytime I have been to a show it was just as strict as going into a gun shop. Private sale is the issue. There is no traceability there. I have mixed feelings
Oh, none of these folks have a clue about foreign policy
The point is moot. There are so many guns in the country, your dog can go out and bring one home.
“Our friends and neighbors in the region”
Do we have friends and neighbors in that region? Oh, Saudi Arabia. Right.
Damn…Anderson Cooper does need to breed.
I’m a walking recessive gene. I’d do more harm than good.
Ooh, laser eyes from O’Malley.
@Judi and that is a big problem with all gun laws. There is no uniformity, it’s so convoluted most cops struggle with them.
Most cops struggle with traffic laws, much less gun laws.
@cruiser, could you vote for O’Mally??
Rot Roh…Bernie is saying Putin will regret what he is doing in Syria….I sense another red line being drawn. How and why Bernie and whatcha gonna do to put Putin in his place and make him regret this? Sheesh! Going from bad to worse
@Judi But the fact that matters is that guns in America are like booze or dope. Everyone who wants one or several knows where and how to get one.
Bernie is a pacifist. He will not do anything militarily until and unless the US or our allies are in danger
@stanleybmanly , everyone who wants to drink and drive can get alcohol too. Should we abolish DUII laws?
@Judi Blame the alcohol, oh wait.. we tried that once.
Keep the DUI laws though
Hilary says we should not send diplomats to areas that are not safe and secure….Gee you mean like Benghazi when shit hits the fan and where you sit on your hands and do nothing while these Diplomats are slaughtered?
Bernie: “When I was a young man I strongly opposed the war in Vietnam. Not the brave men like Webb here, who fought in that war, but the policies that brought us there.”
Of course not. I’m not saying stop prosecuting gun crimes. But just like drunk driving, the availability frames the reality.
Commercial break. I need some coffee.
For the non-US viewers, yes – this shit show is what we call a “debate” here in the U.S., and is a major step towards deciding who will become president.
Sandwich. Gonna watch in the kitchen
The breaks are more substantive.
@Judi With the Republicans that are stepping up to the plate and the discord amongst them and theiir party… I could see possibly considering casting a vote his way but he has a long way to go and a lot more ‘political issue’ meat to put on his bones before I do. Talk is one thing can he bridge the impasse that is the Congress that is screwing each and everyone of us. Not so sure at this stage.
Oh, I am not voting for anyone “debating” tonight. I may actually sit out this election.
as if it even matters
Oh, I vote in every election I’m eligible for – if only to have my objections a matter of public record.
I voted last night. In Canada’s advanced polls. I an running out of popcorn.
What was that cheering about? My dog was barking!,
OK Bernie we want our President to ignore Hilaries Emails and how and why those 4 brave men died in Benghazi…yes lets talk about cotton candy and fresh breezes that don’t put food on our tables or balance our budget and reduce our deficit and instead solve ALLL the problems in the world while ignoring those within our borders.
Oh ffs, drop the damned Benghazi thing.
What IS your plan, Hilary?
I’m watching CNN. I can’t watch Youtube, too.
OH MY GOD can the woman answer a question?
I’m enjoying watching grown-ups debate important issues.
ouch… So we are saying that you shouldn’t get your daddies job when he dies.
Not everyone needs or should go to college.. and student loan interest rates are already low
bitch please, I worked 50 hours and went to school.
While I respect your ability to attend school and still have a more-than-full-time job, I’d really prefer if students could be able to actually focus on their studies and learn shit, instead of doing the bare minimum to make a passing grade and get the degree. College should not be high school 2.0. It’s too damned expensive for that.
@Seek agreed 100% having to do that was no badge of honor. It was a perfect case for how shitty things are
Bernie…Bernie…Bernie….once again we already nearly pay double for our kids educations! HS dude can you address why our educational system despite all the money we throw at it that uses common core as the foundation of our curriculum and you want us to spend more on this shit? Seriously? If you have kids they last went to school before I was born and today thngs are different and much much worse. FIX the educational system before you stand to call to spend more money on this nonsense. The halls of Fluther is lined with families that home school because of how crappy our educational programs are. It is time for accountability of who is in charge and time to review the hard choices we HAVE to make to make our educational programs better NOT MORE EXPENSIVE! Point Hilary!
Somebody go loosen Jim Webbs Tie! Trump we need some water here stat!
The problem with our public school system is that it is too localized. There’s no central Federal authority for, say, elementary schools. The Fed demands a certain set of standards, and the states each come up with a way to measure how each county or municipality attain those standards.
It’s ridiculous.
It leads to some schools being able to have private tutors available to everyone and other schools still trying to teach the way they have since 1956 plus teaching a specific standardized test. My local district is one of the latter, which is why I choose to homeschool.
SERIOUSLY! Hilary just accuse someone of stealing and breaking the law???? O_O
Some slippery answers to the Snowden question
Well, no one wants to say it’s OK that he broke the law… I am, however, disappointed no one mentioned that any law against protecting the American people from the illegal actions of the Government is a bad law that should be rewritten or abolished.
… as pretty much everybody in this room… LOL. I agree with Seek on Cooper.
I wonder what stupid questions we will get.. You know, like “How much do you love Jesus?”.
If she says “first woman President” one more time I’m going to stab her in the face with a knitting needle.
NO ONE IS VOTING FOR YOUR UTERUS.
I think it would only be fair to give Hilary a stool to stand on….just sayin.
Let me guess.. Trump voter.
Nah @johnpowell I am all in favor of taking away Trumps soap box he stands on.
“No, I’m not going to take a position, but what he said”
Can’t stand Hilary. Sigh.
Gee. Aren’t they going to tell us what their Secret Service code names are going to be? If they don’t, they risk losing any Repub crossovers.
Before tonight I didn’t despise her. She fixed that.
She’s way too right-leaning for me.
She’s fence-sitting. “I’ll say whatever I can to get elected and then do whatever the other guys will let me.”
@Seek Not too late to get tickets to the early show
Commercial break, time to pop in here. Loving this debate!
I prefer Bernie. But I will vote for her if needed. The Republicans are all bonkers.
Oh definitely, @johnpowell but seriously I hope I don’t have to.
Exactly. She’s a massive fence-sitter and doesn’t actually say anything. It’s heavily calculated and scripted and gross.
I can’t vote for her. I’ve always done that in the past if it meant beating a republican, but I just can’t anymore.
If I end up having to vote for Clinton, it’s going to take a really long shower to feel clean again.
She’s a lot more polished. I wish Bernie had the quick mind he had 30 years ago. God, he was fast on the uptake. But he’s still the same in every other way. My favorite American Social Dem.
@Cruiser The one on TV. BERNIE! But will vote for whoever the nom. is.
@DrasticDreamer “She’s way too right-leaning for me.” as in Tea Party right or right of center and out of orbit of the Democratic goals?
Oooh, “Which enemy are you most proud of?”
Bernie: Wall Street and the Pharmaceutical Industry
I missed the Hilary answer. Kid needed help on the smartphone
@Cruiser Right of center, definitely. I like farrrr leaning leftists.
Poor Odo has absolutely zero charisma.
HF! Did Webb just say that? Ending arguments just ended your Presidential bid! Woah!
Yeah… Webb is just coming across as whiny.
@Johnpowell Yes, I know. I get it, which is exactly why I always have voted for the lesser of two evils. But America is broken and I’m sick of supporting it the way it is.
I might vote for her if it truly seems like one of the Republicans will win, but I will feel like a sellout and it will make me extremely sad and angry.
Does O’Malley look like Dr. Spocks nephew?
A little bit. That’s two Star Trek characters on stage.
I kinda like O’Malley. Maybe not for President, but he’d have my vote for local office.
@Seek And one Lost In Space Dr.!
I love how passionate Bernie is.
@Seek I thought O’Malley brought some sane and sensible arguments as to what the Dems could actually execute to address the problems we as a country are sucking wind on these days
I agree. But I know how math works and he doesn’t have the charisma or support to justify voting for him. I might as well vote for Hilary as for him. The race is between Hilary and Bernie. That’s just the way it is.
I like Bernie better than O’Malley, anyway.
My three favorite highlights:
“At the risk of making a bad political move… “ENOUGH ABOUT YOUR DAMNED EMAILS!” (Huge Applause) -Bernie
”...as pretty much most the people in this room..”. -Cooper
O’Malley’s closing speech.
The polls will probably show Hillary as the winner. Bernie may get some of her people, but he certainly won’t lose any to her.
I think they lost the Repub cross-over vote by not insulting each other or us and by not telling us their Secret Service code names.
Webb is a cigar store Indian. He lacks the passionate delivery of Hillary or Bernie.
43 years old and I just watched my first presidential “debate”. These are humiliating sporting events – not tools for differentiating candidates’ positions.
In Jr High we had a really good debate teacher (recently found him on Facebook, it’s awesome.)
I would love to see a REAL debate, with specific topics and points. It will never happen but it would be great.
Damn it, I had to go to the bathroom and missed almost all of the final statements. Pouting.
I also missed the beginning of the debate. Were potential VP picks discussed at all?
^ Sanders fell into a mud pit, Clinton was chopped because her meal was undercooked, Chafee was voted off the island, O’Malley’s tattoo challenge lacked contrast, and Webb did not receive a rose.
@augustlan heck no…getting the brides made award this early in the game is unthinkable to those who think they have a chance.
Can someone for once take a straight razor to Axelrod’s chrome dome and liberate those 4 strands of hair on the middle of his head? Donald Trump comb over he is not.
Thanks for the recap. :)
Chafee and Webb should drop out right now, and save themselves further embarrassment.
Bernie must be the president, but I’m scared he might get too excited and hurt himself. Needs a strong VP. I’d love to see him speak everyday. Life would be funnier.
@Cruiser I agree with you on the education. But, problem is, I have never been able to figure out what the problem is and I don’t think anyone else has either. And, if we cannot even define the problem, how do we even think to propose to fix it?
@rojo Well, there is a fine model out there, if we’re not to arrogant to take a look at another country’s solutions. Norway is considered to have the best schools in the democratic world. I think it’s worth the few bucks it would cost to send a well-chosen committee over there for a few months and take a thorough look at what they are doing right. If we like what we see, do it here.
Spending tax money on education is extremely important, as you all know. But what is rarely mentioned is that an educated citizenry creates more taxpayers. Creating more taxpayers is much preferable to raising taxes on existing taxpayers and I can’t see why anyone, Left or Right, would be against open and tuition-free education from day-care (which puts mothers back to work) through Phd programs. That, and single-payer universal healthcare, are the two most important investments a country can make to generate wealth. You are crippled without a healthy, educated work force.
@rojo It not just a problem it is many and it helps to have kids in the public school system to have a better understanding of what is broken.
In no particular order…
Parents treat school as public day care and are not supportive or engaged in their childs education.
Tenure IMHO keeps teachers teaching who have no business being in a classroom.
Many great teachers are underpaid and many lousy tenured teachers are overpaid especially at the administration level which is siphoning funds that should otherwise be directed at higher achieving programs.
Many schools and classrooms are overcrowded and teachers cannot possibly give students the time and support in and out of the classroom.
We really should offer school vouchers so parents have more choices in where their kids can attend school.
It might be redundant but we need to hold teachers and administrators more accountable for the jobs they do but it is often a Catch 22 as they often are dealing with overcrowded classrooms and parents who raise hell when their kids are getting D’s and F’s and not willing to lift a finger at home to help and encourage their kids to do better in school.
The most interesting thing about watching something like this is that we get to watch how media works. I’m sure everyone has had the opportunity to check out how cnn.com is gushing over Clinton. It reads like a Clinton For President site. This is the media…in a “democracy” that is only as good as its media.
Let’s take a look at who funds Clinton: donor list. Time Warner, CNN’s parent company, is the 7th largest donor to Clinton ($500k).
While browsing this donor list, it’s interesting to hear Clinton talk now. She’s been pushed into adopting a platform that resemble’s Sanders’, and using language about how she will fight against wall street and big banks. This is a good thing, I suppose. But her career is financed by these things she is temporarily speaking out against.
If anyone’s interested in the largest Sanders’ donors, here is the list. Big difference.
It looks like the media and Democratic party is still going to go full-Clinton, so we’ll likely see her as the nominee. This guarantees a Republican president, however. Gone will be the enthusiasm and voter turnout. If Massachusetts isn’t close, I’ll just sit this one out. I don’t think I can get myself to vote for Clinton (or a Democrat) again. I’m not a Democrat, and the lesser of two evils thing is a tough thing to do in a state that is highly unlikely to go Republican.
@DoNotKnow I noticed CNN this morning also was praising the virtues of Clinton. Her donor list scares the shit out of me, Jesus H. Christ in a chicken basket. A vote for her is a vote for the status quo. Thanks for linking it!
I wish I hadn’t missed this! And I wish I had a TV to watch the debate!
@dxs, I watched it online and was here on my phone.
And I wish I had wifi and a phone that has GB to watch videos!
Boo. Sorry. :-( I’d invite you over next time but you probably don’t have a plane either. ~
I’ll try to be at school for the next one, which I hope there is.
