Can you help me come up with a Halloween themed baked good that I can make for a bake sale?

Asked by dammitjanetfromvegas (4601points) October 16th, 2015

I volunteered to make a few dozen of something for the bake sale for the Jr. High School Halloween dance next Friday.

I’d like to make something other than the typical brownie or sugar cookie. Something the Jr. High students would enjoy. I want it to be a hit.

Help!

What 12–13 yr old would not go nuts for a Dirt Cupcake

Emily just said “Yes!”

But keep the ideas coming everyone. We love to bake and I may make more than one item.

Have a great time at the dance Emily

You can make cupcakes and put those little candy pumpkins on top and pipe some green stems and tendrils on the “ground.”

How hard would it be for you to fashion skulls from Ricecrispy treats and drizzle a red frosting on them to resemble blood? Or do the traditional fudge on the shape of an eyeball, cover them with a white frosting, candy pupils, and food coloring or very thin red frosting for blood veins?

Brain cupcakes!
Walking Dead Zombie cookies.
Zombie finger cookies

Oh you’ll be able to have real fun with this idea! I hope you’ll take some photos of whatever you end up making.

@Cruiser Those wormy, dirty-looking cupcakes are hilarious! You’re right; anyone in junior high school would love them.

These are all great. We are going to have so much fun. Thanks everyone!

Does it have to be a baked good? If everyone else is asked to bring one, how about doing something different? Here is a recipe for for Wormy Orange Punch that might appeal to the crowd.

Mummy Cookies

Jack Skellington Cupcakes

Pumpkin Fudge

Skeleton Cookies

Halloween Bark

If it doesn’t have to be a dozen of something, this Pumpkin Cake is really cool.

My roommate used to make pumpkin cookies. They didn’t look like pumpkins, they were drop cookies made from pumpkin and had sweet pumpkin icing glaze on them. I was never into the ghoulish part of Halloween, so I wouldn’t have fine graveyards and skeletons, but maybe some of the cuter alternatives suggested.

I’ve made pumpkin cookies of the type @JLeslie is talking about, only without the glaze. They are terrific and if you’re needing a fall dessert or something for a party, dinner or event that is not necessarily cute (as they just look like little cakey-cookies), they are the way to go. Everyone loves them. I got my recipe from Allrecipes but you can get one from Epicurious, too.

The very best Halloween treat I ever made were Meringue Ghosts. A hit, for sure. They are delicious and incredibly cute – even adults can’t help but love them.

They’re fairly easy to make because all you have to do is mix eggs and sugar. You’ll have to allow for some time to apply the eyes, but it’s a lot of fun to make the little guys, so that’s not too bad.

Here is a detailed how-to video.

@Earthbound_Misfit‘s Zombie cookies get my vote.
I’d probably try to keep mine…they’re too cute to eat.

@Cruiser‘s Dracula’s Dentures are pretty damned cool, too. I think I might try a blanched almond in place of a marshmallow and almond sliver. Might have to trim the top a bit – probably best flatten the top with a fine grater.

Super easy/cute.

Make a spider web cake. All you have to do is make a two layer chocolate cake cover it with white frosting then draw circles on top of it with chocolate frosting. Finally use a butter knife and lightly draw it through the frosting from the middle outward about eight times evenly spaced. You can use cupcakes too and create mini-webs

My mom used to make these things that were made with Jello and pudding. They were orange and pumpkin-shaped. I swear the name was something like “Jigglers” because I remembered how annoyed I was by it, but the closest recipe I could find was this one.

Basically, they’re orange jello and vanilla pudding shaped into pumpkins.

ibstubro's avatar

These jigglers are cuter, @dxs, less perishable if you use these for the head.

I just got home from my nephew’s Halloween carnival at school, so it made me wonder what you ended up deciding upon @dammitjanetfromvegas . I won a cake walk tonight and got a big plate of homemade brownies.

I was going to update, so sorry. Where’s update lady? haha

My daughter loved the dirt cupcake idea, so we went with that. It was a huge hit. One girl kept coming back for more. I think she bought four. I used frosting in the middle instead of pudding since the items could not be refrigerated at the dance. They were tasty.

Dammit, Janet.
I wanted some pix of zombie cookies. I’ve told and told people how cute they were.

I’m sure the cupcakes were great!

@ibstubro You should make some and share them with all of us : )

@dammitjanetfromvegas I was just watching the cooking show with The Pioneer Woman and she made some of those dirt things for her daughter’s birthday. She took it up a notch, by making them in a little flower pot. See it Here.

@dammitjanetfromvegas Sounds like you helped your daughter have a memorable dance…and what this time of life is all about! WTG DJFLV!
