What are some themes of the movie "Les Miserables"?

Asked by dopeguru (1928points) October 17th, 2015

Poverty seems to be the main theme. What are some others and why? How are they portrayed in the film? I’m writing my own script and need to know how the glorious Tom Hooper manages to show the themes on screen.

Justice… ruining someone’s life from stealing a loaf of bread. Also redemption for a theif to become a mayor. Also compation and guilt for the inspector letting the mayor go and shooting himself.

You would do well to read Hugo’s original, you’ll get a much better in depth understanding.

^^^ @dopeguru You don’t see Valjeans redemption when forgiven by the priest? And the admonition to use the silver to reclaim his life? Redemption is a significant theme to the story.

But as @canidmajor said, you really need to end the book to understand the story, and then evaluate whether the movie adaptation of the stage musical adequately conveys any or all of the points of the book.
