Who is this Mary Ann down by the seaside sifting sand?
I heard a calypso version of the music on the radio this morning and it got me to wondering about the lyrics. For those of you too young to remember them, here is a link Who is Mary Ann? Is she perhaps a beautiful teenager on summer vacation who likes mingling with people on the beach? But what is with all this sand sifting? Maybe she is an adult with a metal detector and lives off the coins and jewelry dropped by the tourists. But all this sand sifting sounds a bit compulsive. Maybe she is a slightly demented homeless person, but then she would be more likely to scare the children away than be loved by them.

I think she was the Mary Ann who was lost with Gilligan and the rest of the castaways when their three hour tour met its unfortunate end.
Perhaps she is a very very early female Caribbean rap artist looking to bust a rhyme and the only thing she can come up with that rhymes with her name was ‘sifting sand’. Sand being the local narcotics she is involved in the production of. She also used the alias Mary Jane when she was involved in the Rastafarian marijuana trade. It is theorized she had a brother Javiar who made a living selling Cheap Cigar. Her sister Mary Moot, made a fortune in the late 60’s as the cruise ship industry was starting up by establishing a chain of brothels thruout the islands. Mary Moot’s Prostitutes was their franchise.
Mary Ann is a euphemism for marijuana. Caribbean people love their ganja.
I suspect the song was directed at a specific person whom we are not to know. I highly doubt the song refers to marijuana. (Besides, that’s Mary Jane.)
She obviously suffered from OCD.
She must be the sister of Sally sell sea shells by the sea shore.
Toy boats, toy boats, toy boats.
Rubber baby buggy bumpers.
She’s dropped something in the sand, a watch or a piece of jewellery and she’s determined not to leave until she’s found it.
PS according to the lyrics it could be an engagement ring.
