Ned Quinn stood back, wiped his hands, and admired the huge bank of dials, lights and
switches. Several years and many fortunes had gone into his project. Finally it was ready.
Ned placed the metal skullcap on his head and plugged the wires into the control panel. He turned the switch to ON and spoke: « Pound note ».
There was a whirring sound. In the Receiver a piece of paper appeared. Ned inspected it. Real.
‘Martini’, he said.
A whirring sound. A puddle formed in the Receiver. Ned cursed silently. He had a lot to learn.
‘A bottle of beer’, he said.
The whirring sound was followed by the appearance of the familiar brown bottle. Ned tasted the contents and grinned.
Chuckling, he experimented further.
Ned enlarged the Receiver and prepared for his greatest experiment. He switched on the Materializer, took a deep breath and said, ‘Girl’.
The whirring sound swelled and faded. In the Receiver stood a lovely girl. She was naked.
Ned had not asked for clothing.
She had freckles, a brace and pigtails. She was eight years old.
‘Hell! » said Quinn.
The fireman found two charred skeletons in the smouldering rubble.
2nd document : We will enter a whole new round of mastery. We will move from being creators of machine intelligence to being creators of intelligent machines. Machines have begin to rival with human intelligence or perhaps, even exceed it. Up to now, robots’ ability to think and act autonomously has eliminated by two major hurdles. Robots can see, they can see better than us, but they don’t understand what they are seeing, they can’t recognize objects very well, and the second is very important, robots can hear, robots can hear much better than us but they don’t necessarily understand what they are hearing. Researchers have created an machine with object recognition skills by combining computer science with neuroscience.
3rd document : In the coming decades, we’ll see how we are becoming masters of intelligence, how science will allow us to create, and manipulate intelligence almost at will.This mastery intelligence will enable us to design new worlds. But this is just the first step from mastering machines intelligence to creating intelligent machines. And ultimately, we will redesign our own minds. Driving all this is the exponential growth of computing power. The exponential growth of computer power will reshape all of human civilization. By 2020, intelligence will be everywhere, not just in the car, on the roads, but practically in every object.
