Etta, Ella, Lena, Billy, Ethel, Sinatra.
A lot of the greats covered the song, but I can’t seem to find the definitive version for me.
I’m partial to Etta James’ recording, as it has the same instrumentation as “At Last”, one of my all time favorite songs.
Hold on! As I was editing this question, I played Billie Holiday’s, and that may have been what I was looking for.

Im pretty partial to Ella Fitzgerald’s version. To me it’s more ‘bluesy’ but holding to the spirit of the lyrics.
For me, there’s no “best” version, only the one I love most. It’s Sinatra’s, recorded in his prime in the ‘50s. I can’t possibly recall the number of times I’ve listened to it over the decades. I’m listening to it in my head as I write this. SO melancholy.
I don’t think it gets any better than Lena.
How about “Time After Time”? That became one of Sinatra’s signature songs, but I’ve always preferred the way Kathryn Grayson sang it in “It Happened In Brooklyn.”
I think I like the earthiness of Billie Holiday’s version, but I haven’t listened to a version (I listened to each of the people listed in Details) that wasn’t great.
I love the song, but don’t have a particular favourite. Billie Holliday’s and Ella Fitzgerald’s versions are beautiful. However, I can’t resist linking this clip, which offers a memorable instrumental version from an excellent film.
WONDERFUL!!!!! No answer’s gonna top THAT!
