My iPhone has paralyzed some apps to download an update.

A pop up box told me that it needed to disable messenger and tripadvisor to download some sort of update. Said it needed room of some sort. It’s been 5 days! How can I stop the download and get my apps working again?

Firstly, have you done any hard resets? If not, you should.
Second, when it specified that it needed X amount of space for the update did you delete enough excess apps to allow for that? If not, that’s likely the cause of the freeze-up. If there wasn’t enough space for the dl, then it’s stuck midway.
If that’s the case, delete enough excess apps to make more than enough room for the full dl (you can always add some back later) and try the update again.
@Buttonstc Can I just stop the update? I don’t really have excess apps. I have apps that came with the phone, and maybe 7 that I added. I’m not an app junky.
Isn’t your iPhone fairly recent?
Have you looked to see how much storage space you have left?
Also, this is the first time I’ve ever heard of an iPhone automatically downloading things.
I think you should call 1–800 MY IPHONE and have them transfer you to a product specialist to get this straightened out.
The reason I’m suggesting that is because if it tried to dl something once, even if you do the hard reset and it sets things right, it may keep repeating trying to dl again if it’s an automatic update.
BTW the call and the tech support is free and they’ve always done an excellent job for whatever problem I had. They don’t outsource their tech support so you won’t find yourself trying to communicate to someone who barely speaks English.
(I would also be interested to see what they have to say about automatic dls. I’ve never heard of such a thing for iPhone. Android, yes, but not Apple. Weird. It makes me wonder if it could be some type of malware.
BTW
From what you’ve told me about only having 7 apps in addition to those which came with the phone, I don’t see how you could possibly be out of storage space.
Let me give you an example for contrast.
On my old iPhone 3G (8gb), I have well over 100 Apps (I am an App junkie) and I STILL have about 2 Gigs of space left.
I’m assuming you have a newer iPhone model with likely more storage space, so I don’t see how you could possibly be out of space. Even if you only started with 8 Gbs, compared to how many apps I have, you’re a miser about storage space by comparison so you must have enough space for an update. The only exception might be if you have a lot of pics and videos on your phone.
Check your settings and let me know how much space you have left.
Something about this is very strange.
I am very tight on storage space. I had a warning about it a few months ago and deleted a bunch of photos. I want to know how to move them to my laptop.
I counted and I think I have added more like 12 apps. I don’t remember for sure which ones came with the phone.
Probably I will call the 800 number. I didn’t know I could do that. I was thinking of going to the apple store tomorrow, but if I can just call that sounds great.
iOS has had automatic updates for several versions now, so that’s not really an issue
Free up some space, the easiest way is to delete photos/videos, but if you need everything there then you can move them over to your computer for storage – online help
iCloud also has a $0.99/mo tier that makes it easier to free up space, so that might be an option for you.
Hope it goes well.

Thanks for clearing up the auto-update issue. I was unaware of this and I must say I don’t like it.
@JLeslie
Free product support is one of the reasons why Apple always comes out on top of any lists rating customer support.
They can guide you through the transfer process so you can free up some space.
After that, a hard reset and a re-download should straighten everything out.
