What's the difference between a jigsaw and a scroll saw?

Asked by Seek (34808points) November 11th, 2015

This Christmas I’m asking Santa for tools. What are the benefits and drawbacks of each of these two, so I know which one I want?

a jig saw is a hand tool with a small blade that can be used to cut things like plywood quickly and easily. A scroll saw is similar but it has a platform and is usually a benchtop device. Scroll saws are for more detailed work and a jigsaw is general purpose. I do not own a scroll saw but own two jig saws. If this is to do fine hobby woodworking a scroll saw is very handy. If this is to do things like household repairs a jig saw along with a reciprocating saw is a must. If you do not own one and this is for hobby work a dremel kit is mandatory They are so handy and have so many diverse uses that I simply can’t link to a single description

GA from @ARE_you_kidding_me.

I would add that space is a serious consideration. A jig saw can be put in a drawer, a scroll saw needs a dedicated space to live.
Dremel is also great advice.
